Honey bee swarm
Low risk- What it looks like
- Brown and golden, furry, about 12 mm; in May and June a cluster the size of a rugby ball hanging off a branch, a hedge or a fence.
- The signs
- A loud cloud of bees that settles into a tight cluster; usually moves on within two or three days to a new home.
- The risk
- Gentle when swarming because there is nothing to defend; protected by law in practice and vital to the garden.
- What we do
- A beekeeper collects the swarm into a box in the evening and rehomes it at an apiary in the Vale. No insecticide, ever.
