Stinging insects
Common wasp
Medium risk- What it looks like
- Shiny bright yellow and black, thin-waisted, about 15 mm, with few hairs; flies fast and straight into a hole.
- The signs
- Steady traffic into one hole in the eaves, an air brick, the shed or the ground; a papery grey nest the size of a football by August.
- The risk
- Stings repeatedly and defends the nest aggressively; a serious risk to anyone with an allergy.
- What we do
- A dust puffed into the entrance with a lance, at any height a ladder reaches; a free return if traffic has not stopped in 48 hours.
