A wasp nest £65 whatever the height from a ladder; honey bee swarms collected and rehomed free

Wasps, and bees relocated

A wasp nest in the eaves, the shed or a hole in the lawn treated the same day for £65, the nest dead within a few hours. Honey bees are a different animal: a swarm is collected by a beekeeper and rehomed in the Vale at no charge, and bumble bees are left to finish their season. We tell you which you have before we do anything.

From June to September the phone is mostly wasps. A nest in the eaves, behind a soffit, in an air brick or the compost bin can hold five thousand wasps by August, and the only reliable way to deal with it is an insecticide dust puffed into the entrance with a lance, which the workers carry inside. The traffic stops within a few hours and the nest is dead by the next day. We do not remove the nest, because a dead nest is never reused, and taking it out of a soffit means taking the soffit off.

Bees get a lot of wasp calls and they should not. A honey bee swarm hanging off a hedge in May or June is a colony looking for a home, and it is gentle because it has nothing to defend; Nia keeps bees and collects swarms into a box in the evening, and they go to an apiary near Peterston. Bumble bees nest in the ground and the bird box for a single summer and die off in the autumn; they are vital pollinators, they rarely sting, and we will not treat them. If a honey bee colony has moved into a cavity wall we give you the name of the beekeeper who does cut-outs, which is a builder's job as much as ours.

We treat wasps any time the nest is active, though they are calmer in the evening when the foragers are home. Keep children and pets indoors for an hour after the treatment, do not block the entrance, and expect a few angry wasps around the spot for a day. If the traffic has not stopped in 48 hours we come back free.

Questions about wasps and bees

How do I tell bees from wasps?

Wasps are shiny, bright yellow and black, thin-waisted and fly fast in a straight line into a hole. Honey bees are brown, furry and hang in a cluster when they swarm. Bumble bees are big and fluffy. Send a photograph to the mobile and we will tell you in minutes.

Why not just remove the wasp nest?

Because a treated nest is dead, wasps never reuse an old nest, and removing one from a roof means taking the roof apart. If the nest is somewhere you can see and reach, we will bag it up after the treatment if you ask.
