What it looks like
Small, 3 to 5 mm, black and shiny; marches in lines along skirting boards and worktops in spring and summer.
The signs
A trail from a gap in the back door or a crack in the floor to anything sweet; flying ants on one warm humid day in July.
The risk
A nuisance more than a risk: they contaminate food but do not bite or damage the house.
What we do
Gel bait on the trail that the workers carry back to the nest, which is gone within a week.

Questions about the identifier

I am still not sure what it is.

Text a photograph to 07700 900 670, with something for scale if you can, and a technician will tell you, usually within the hour in the day. Droppings photographed next to a coin are the most useful picture you can send.

Can I treat it myself?

Ants, often, with a gel bait from a hardware shop; a few mice, sometimes, with snap traps. Rats, wasps, bed bugs and cockroaches, rarely: the shop products kill the ones you see and leave the nest. We will tell you honestly on the phone if a DIY fix will do.

Why is the bee free?

Because Nia keeps bees, a swarm is a colony she is glad to have, and killing honey bees is something we will not do. It costs us an evening and some petrol.

Does the price ever change?

Not for the jobs on this page. A wasp nest needing a tower, a block of flats with cockroaches in the risers, or a gull roof needing a platform is quoted, and we say so before we come.
