Runners, rugby, five-a-side and the gym, back to it sensibly

Sports injuries

Sprains, strains and overuse injuries from running, rugby, football, climbing and the gym: what is injured, how long it is likely to take, how to keep training around it, and a plan for getting back without doing it again.

Sports injuries are frustrating mostly because of the time out. We aim to keep you doing as much as is sensible while the injury settles, and to work out why it happened so it does not happen again.

We see a lot of runners from the Swansea Bay path and the parkrun, rugby and football players from the city clubs, climbers and gym-goers. Common problems include runner's knee, Achilles and calf pain, shin splints, hamstring strains, ankle sprains, shoulder pain from the gym and back pain from heavy lifting. We assess the injury and the way you move, and look at training load, footwear and technique as well as the sore bit.

Treatment combines hands-on work with a graded plan: what to keep doing, what to stop for now, and how to build back up. If we suspect a fracture, a complete tear or a joint that needs a surgeon's opinion, we say so and send you to the minor injuries unit or your GP. We do not tape people up so they can play on something that needs rest.

Questions about sports injuries

Can I keep running?

Often, yes, with changes. We will tell you what is sensible: shorter, slower, flatter, or a few weeks of something else.

Do you do sports massage?

Soft tissue work is part of osteopathic treatment. We do not offer massage on its own.

Book an appointment, or ask first.

The first appointment is an hour and £58: questions and examination before any treatment, an honest view of whether osteopathy is the right thing, and a plan in plain words. Book a slot from the diary or ring the clinic.
