First visit

Your first visit, step by step.

An hour, £58, with no GP referral needed. Here is what happens, what to wear and what it costs, so nothing about it is a surprise.

An osteopath and a patient sitting at a desk with a model of the spine between them, the osteopath pointing to the lower back

What happens

Six things, in order.

  1. Before you come

A short form about your health and medicines, sent by email when you book, so the first appointment is not spent filling it in. Bring any scan reports or letters you have.

  2. What to wear

Comfortable clothes you can move in, with shorts or leggings for back, hip and knee problems. We may ask you to undress to your underwear to see how you move; you can always keep more on, and gowns are available.

  3. Questions first

About forty minutes of history and examination before anyone treats you: how it started, what makes it worse, your health, your work, your sport, and what you want to get back to.

  4. The explanation

What we think is going on, using the model on the desk, how long it is likely to take, and whether osteopathy is the right thing, or whether your GP or a scan should come first.

  5. Treatment, if you agree

Each technique explained before we use it. Soft tissue work, gentle joint movement, and manipulation only if you are happy with it. Tell us to stop at any time.

  6. Afterwards

Two or three exercises, sent to your phone. You may ache for a day or so; that is normal. We will say when to come back, and whether you need to.

Questions about the first visit

Do I have to undress?

Only as much as you are comfortable with. Seeing how the back or hip moves is easier in underwear or shorts; gowns are available, and you can always keep more on.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. A friend, partner or parent is welcome in the room, and we can provide a chaperone whenever you would like one.

What about children?

We see young people from twelve, with a parent or guardian present. For younger children, ask your GP or health visitor first.

What if I need a scan or a GP?

We will say so, explain why, and with your consent write to your GP. We do not refer for private scans unless there is a clear reason.

Book an appointment, or ask first.

The first appointment is an hour and £58: questions and examination before any treatment, an honest view of whether osteopathy is the right thing, and a plan in plain words. Book a slot from the diary or ring the clinic.
