Reading, writing and maths from Year 3; the 11+ course over the autumn term, £540 for thirty group hours

11+ and primary

For Years 3 to 6: confidence with reading, writing and maths in one-to-one sessions at £32 an hour with tutors who are primary teachers, and for families applying to selective or independent schools, the 11+ course: thirty hours in a group of four across the autumn term covering verbal and non-verbal reasoning, maths and English, with four timed mocks and honest feedback on whether to sit it.

Primary tutoring is mostly about confidence: the child who has decided they are bad at maths, the reader who stopped enjoying it in Year 4, the Year 6 who is fine but anxious about the move to secondary. Our primary tutors are primary teachers, the sessions are shorter and more varied, and parents get a report every half term that says what to do at the kitchen table.

One-to-one for Years 3 to 6 is forty-five minutes or an hour, at the centre, with a tutor who teaches or has taught in a primary classroom: phonics and reading fluency, comprehension, writing, times tables and the four operations, fractions, reasoning and the things the Year 6 tests ask. It is a plan, not a worksheet, and we tell you when the job is done.

The 11+ course runs from September to December for children sitting entrance exams for selective or independent schools in January: thirty hours in a group of four, covering verbal and non-verbal reasoning, maths and English to the format of the schools you are applying to, with a timed mock every three weeks. After the second mock we tell you honestly whether we think the exam is the right thing for your child, because a year of preparation for a school that will not suit them is a year wasted.

Questions about 11+ and primary

What age do you start?

Year 3, usually. Younger than that, the best tutor is a parent with a book and twenty minutes a day, and we will tell you so.

Which schools does the 11+ course prepare for?

The independent schools in and around Cardiff and the grammar schools across the border, whose papers differ. We teach to the ones you are applying to and run mocks in their format.

Start with the free session. Forty-five minutes, no obligation.

Tell us the year group and the subject, and we match a tutor and offer a slot for a free first session at the centre or online: an assessment, a chat with you both, and an honest view of what would help. We reply within the working day. Or ring the office.
