One-to-one

Elis was predicted a 4 in maths in November. Owain did the free session, told us exactly which topics were losing the marks, and Elis went every Thursday until May. He got a 7. The half-term reports were the thing: I knew what was happening without nagging.

Four of them round a table on a Tuesday with Sam, £18 an hour, and she went from hating chemistry to picking it for A-level. The group was the right call; she would not have asked a tutor on her own.

I needed an A for my offer and had a C in the mock. Online with Sam on Wednesday nights, the whiteboard saved after every lesson so I could go back through it, and past paper questions marked by Friday. Got the A, got the place.

After the second mock Eleri sat us down and said honestly that Tomos would get in but would be miserable there. We thought about it and she was right. That conversation was worth more than the course, and the course was good.

Intensive

Fifteen hours at Easter took Lowri from a 5 to a 7 in English language, and the daily marked papers were exactly what she needed. Four stars because the room was too hot on the Thursday and the group was five on one morning when they had said four. They apologised and refunded a morning without being asked, which is why I would still send her back.

Owain marks the actual papers, and it shows: he taught Arjun how the mark scheme thinks. Two A*s and a place to read maths. We were told in January it was possible, not promised, and that was the right way round.

About the four stars

The room was too hot and the group was five. Both were our fault; both are fixed.

Lowri's Easter intensive had a fifth student on the Wednesday because a parent arrived with a sibling and we said yes at the door, which we should not have, and the upstairs room has no air conditioning, which in April we had not thought mattered. We refunded the morning before Gareth asked. Groups are now capped at four with no exceptions at the door, the intensives run in the two downstairs rooms, and there are fans upstairs for the summer one-to-ones. The grade went from a 5 to a 7, which is the part that matters most, and he still sent her back.
