The vans

Four sizes, four rates.

The wrong van costs you money either way: too small and it goes twice, too big and you pay for air. The survey picks it, but this page tells you what each one holds, in boxes and in bedrooms, and what it costs an hour with the crew that comes with it.

Three white removals vehicles of different sizes lined up in a yard: a medium van, a long-wheelbase van and a Luton lorry, the Cardiff skyline faint behind

The four vehicles

The medium van

£65 an hour, 2 crew

A high-roof medium van: about 35 boxes plus a one-bed flat's furniture, or a student room twice over. The right tool for most flats and for a sofa and a bed across town.

  • 35boxes
  • 2crew
  • 3hminimum

Fits: A one-bed flat or a studio; a single room with furniture; a sofa, a bed and a wardrobe.

Two movers carrying stacked boxes down a garden path from a brick houseA big one-bed or a small two-bed

The long wheelbase

£75 an hour, 2 crew

A long-wheelbase high-roof van: about 60 boxes plus the furniture of a big one-bed or a sparse two-bed. Fits where a Luton cannot, which matters in Pontcanna.

  • 60boxes
  • 2crew
  • 3hminimum

Fits: A big one-bed; a two-bed flat with little furniture; a two-bed when access is tight.

The Luton

£85 an hour, 2 crew

A 3.5-tonne Luton with a tail lift: about 100 boxes plus the furniture of a two-bed or a modest three-bed. The van most house moves use; the tail lift makes the fridge and the washing machine a one-minute job.

  • 100boxes
  • 2crew
  • 3hminimum

Fits: A two-bed house; a three-bed with modest furniture; a two-bed plus the garage and the shed.

The 7.5-tonne lorry

£110 an hour, 3 crew

A 7.5-tonne lorry with three crew: about 180 boxes plus the furniture of a three- or four-bed house in one load. For five bedrooms and up it goes twice or we send two.

  • 180boxes
  • 3crew
  • 3hminimum

Fits: A three- or four-bed house in one load; an office of up to twenty desks; a long-distance full load.

In every rate

What the hour includes, and what it does not.

Included

The crew, the van, fuel within 30 miles of Leckwith, padded blankets, straps, a sack truck, a piano trolley on request, dismantling and rebuilding beds and wardrobes, disconnecting and reconnecting the washing machine and the fridge, and £10,000 of goods-in-transit cover.

The clock

Starts when the crew arrives at the first address and stops when the last item is off at the second, rounded to the half hour. Three hours minimum. Travel to you and back to the depot is not charged within 30 miles.

Not included

Boxes and materials (a box pack is £45), mileage beyond 30 miles at £1.20 a mile each way, a parking suspension at the council's £35, extra cover above £10,000 at £12 per £1,000, and waiting time if completion is late, charged at the hourly rate after the first free hour.

The crews

Two on the vans, three on the lorry, all employed by us and trained here, DBS-checked for the care-home and school work we do, and the same people from the survey to the last box. Dai drives the lorry on Saturdays.

How many boxes is a house?

A one-bed is about 30 boxes. A three-bed is about 90. The loft is the unknown.

The numbers on the cards are what the van holds with the furniture in; a house usually has fewer boxes than that, which is the margin for the garden and the garage. Books and kitchens make the most boxes; a loft that has not been opened in ten years makes the most surprises, which is why the video survey asks you to open it. If the count is close to a van's limit we send the next size up and charge the lower rate, because a second trip costs you more than the difference.

Turn bedrooms into a van and a figure

Bedrooms in, a figure out. Then a video survey and a quote in writing.

The estimate page turns the number of bedrooms into a van, a crew and a price before you ring. The quote form takes two minutes; Dai or Sioned replies within the working day with a video survey slot the same week, and the quote after it is the figure on the invoice.
