A medium van and two of us from £65 an hour; most flats are three to four hours, £195 to £260

Flat and student moves

A one-bed in the Bay, a student house in Cathays, a room in a shared flat: the medium van, two of us, three hours minimum, and a figure of £195 to £260 for most flats. We know every car park, service lift and awkward stairwell in Cardiff Bay and we bring the parking suspension if the street needs one.

Half of our weekday jobs are flats, and they are different from houses: the lift that has to be booked, the loading bay with a twenty-minute limit, the Victorian conversion with the turn at the top of the stairs. The medium van is the right tool for nearly all of them, two of us is the right crew, and three hours covers most one-beds across the city.

Tell us the building and we probably know it: the lift codes at the Bay developments, which loading bays are enforced, where the porter is on a Saturday. If the street needs a parking suspension we apply for it (the council charges £35 and needs ten days); if the building has a move-in slot we book it. We bring the blankets, a sack truck and a trolley that fits the lift.

Students and sharers: we do a lot of Cathays and Roath in June and September, often one room rather than a flat, and the medium van with two crew for three hours is still the cheapest honest way to do it. A box pack (twenty boxes, tape and paper, £45, buy-back on the ones you do not use) the week before makes it a two-hour job. We also do a flat to storage and back for the summer at the unit prices on the storage page.

What is included

  • The medium van (about 35 boxes and a one-bed's furniture) and two crew
  • Three hours minimum, then by the half hour
  • Lift bookings and parking suspensions arranged
  • Blankets, sack truck, a trolley that fits a lift
  • £10,000 goods-in-transit cover
  • Boxes delivered the week before for £45, buy-back on unused

What it costs

£65 an hour for the medium van and two crew, three hours minimum (£195), including VAT. A long-wheelbase van for a bigger flat is £75. Including VAT, fuel within 30 miles and £10,000 of cover. The vans page has the four sizes and what each holds; the estimate page turns bedrooms into a figure.

Questions about flat moves

Can one person and a van do it cheaper?

Not with us: two crew is the minimum because a sofa, a mattress and a fridge are two-person lifts and a one-man van ends with you carrying the other end. Two of us for three hours is usually quicker and cheaper than one for six.

Do you do same-week moves?

Often, midweek. Ring in the morning and we will know by lunchtime; Saturdays go two to three weeks out.

Bedrooms in, a figure out. Then a video survey and a quote in writing.

The estimate page turns the number of bedrooms into a van, a crew and a price before you ring. The quote form takes two minutes; Dai or Sioned replies within the working day with a video survey slot the same week, and the quote after it is the figure on the invoice.
