7kW home chargers that can run on your solar surplus, fitted in a morning by our own electricians, from £950

EV chargers

7kW home chargers fitted on the wall by the drive, tethered or untethered, with load management so the house fuse never trips and a solar mode that charges the car from your surplus. Fitted in a morning by our own electricians, from £950.

Charging at home overnight is the cheapest way to run an electric car, and charging from your own solar on a sunny afternoon is cheaper still.

We fit 7kW chargers from three manufacturers we trust, tethered (the cable stays on the wall) or untethered (you plug in your own). Every installation includes a check of your supply and consumer unit, a dedicated circuit, earthing protection and load management, which slows the charger when the oven and the shower are on so the main fuse never blows.

If you have solar, a charger with a solar mode sends only the surplus to the car, so the electricity that would have been exported for 15p fills the battery instead. Most customers use a mix: solar when the car is home in the day, a cheap overnight tariff otherwise.

Most installations take a morning. We notify the network operator and register the charger, and set up the app and the tariff schedule before we leave.

What it costs

From £950 fitted for a 7kW charger within ten metres of the consumer unit; £1,150 with a solar-surplus mode. The savings estimate shows what a solar system might produce and save on your roof, with every assumption beside it; the heat pump sizer gives a first size and explains the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Questions about eV chargers

Do I need a driveway?

You need off-street parking where the cable can reach the car without crossing a public pavement. Trailing a cable across a pavement is not allowed.

How long does a full charge take?

About an hour for every 25 to 30 miles at 7kW, so most cars fill overnight from empty.

Can it charge only from solar?

Yes, on a charger with a solar mode, though in winter that will be slow. Most people let it top up from the grid overnight as well.
