Heat pumps
A first size, and the grant.
Bedrooms and insulation give a first idea of the heat pump, the cylinder and the typical price before and after the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. A room-by-room survey decides the real size; this tells you roughly where you will land.

A first idea from typical houses, not a design or a quote. Two three-bedroom houses can lose heat at very different rates; the room-by-room heat-loss survey sets the real size, the radiators that need changing and the price. The grant is Ofgem's scheme, not ours; its amount and rules can change, and we confirm both before you sign.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The grant, in plain words.
Run by Ofgem in England and Wales. We are MCS certified, so we can apply for you; the grant comes off our price.
Who it is for
Owners of homes and small non-domestic buildings in England and Wales, including landlords, replacing fossil fuel heating (gas, oil, LPG) or direct electric heating with a heat pump. New-build homes generally do not qualify.
How much
At the time of writing, Ofgem publishes the grant for an air source heat pump as £7,500. The scheme can change, so we check the current figure with you before you sign anything.
What you need
A valid Energy Performance Certificate with no outstanding recommendation for loft or cavity wall insulation, unless you have an exemption. If the EPC asks for insulation, it has to be done first; we will tell you on the survey.
Who applies
The installer applies, not you, and it must be an MCS-certified installer. Ofgem writes to you to confirm you agreed to it. When the grant is approved, it comes off our price.
When it is paid
The grant is paid to us after the installation is commissioned and registered with MCS. You never pay the grant amount and wait to claim it back.
What it does not cover
Insulation, new radiators beyond those the design needs, or a heat pump in a home that already had one. The quote shows the full price, the grant and what you pay.
Living with one
Low and steady, not hot and off.
A heat pump runs at a lower flow temperature than a boiler, for longer, and the radiators feel warm rather than hot. The house stays at an even temperature all day. Most people set it once and leave it; Kelly sets the curve with you at handover and checks it after the first cold snap.

Questions about heat pumps
Will a heat pump work in my house?
Most houses that can be kept warm with a boiler can be kept warm with a heat pump, sometimes with larger radiators and better loft insulation. The heat-loss survey tells you, and we will say if your house needs work first.
Do I qualify for the grant?
Usually, if you own the home, it is in England or Wales, the heat pump replaces gas, oil, LPG or electric heating, and you have a valid EPC with no outstanding recommendation for loft or cavity wall insulation. The heat pump page sets it out.
Is it noisy?
A modern unit is about as loud as a fridge at a metre, and quieter at the boundary. We place it to meet the permitted development noise limit and away from bedroom windows.
