Store the daytime solar for the evening, or charge on a cheap night rate: 5 to 15kWh, fitted with solar or added later

Home batteries

A battery stores the solar you would otherwise export for 15p and lets you use it in the evening instead of buying at the full unit rate, or charges overnight on a cheap tariff. 5 to 15kWh, wall-mounted in a garage, utility room or loft. About £4,800 for 10kWh fitted with solar.

A battery does not make electricity; it moves it. It is worth having when you export a lot in the day and buy a lot in the evening, or when your tariff makes the night much cheaper than the day.

Without a battery a typical home uses about a third of its solar generation and exports the rest. With one, that share roughly doubles, because the afternoon surplus is stored for the kettle, the oven and the television after six. Our savings estimate shows both, side by side, with the assumptions.

Batteries also work without solar: on a time-of-use tariff, a battery can charge in the cheap overnight hours and run the house through the expensive evening peak. We will look at your tariff and your usage and tell you honestly whether the sums work.

We fit lithium iron phosphate batteries from 5 to 15kWh with a ten-year product warranty, wall-mounted where it is cool and dry. Most can keep chosen circuits running in a power cut, which is worth asking for if you are on the end of a line that goes down in storms.

What is included

  • 5 to 15kWh lithium iron phosphate
  • With new solar or added to an existing system
  • Time-of-use tariff set-up
  • Backup for chosen circuits in a power cut
  • An app showing where every kWh went
  • Ten-year product warranty

What it costs

About £4,800 for a 10kWh battery fitted with new solar, or £5,400 added to an existing system. 0% VAT on homes until 31 March 2027. The savings estimate shows what a solar system might produce and save on your roof, with every assumption beside it; the heat pump sizer gives a first size and explains the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Questions about batteries

Is a battery worth it?

Sometimes. If you are out all day and export most of your solar, often yes; if you are home all day and already use most of it, less so. The savings estimate shows the difference a battery makes on the same assumptions.

Can I add a battery to my old solar?

Usually, with an AC-coupled battery that does not touch the existing inverter. We check your system on the survey.

Where does it go?

Somewhere cool, dry and accessible: a garage, a utility room or a boarded loft with good ventilation. Not a bedroom.
