Urns, scatterings, headstones and the quiet decisions after

Ashes and memorials

What to do with the ashes, in the weeks or years after: a scattering we can arrange or simply advise on, an urn or keepsakes from the shelf at Station Road, a plot in the garden of remembrance, or a headstone from the stonemason in Burry Port.

There is no hurry with ashes. We hold them for as long as you need, free, and many families come back a year later when they know what they want. This page is the list of what people do, with the prices, so the decision can be made slowly and once.

Ashes are returned in a simple container, or in an urn you choose: wood turned in Carmarthen, ceramic, a biodegradable urn for burial or water, a scatter tube for a beach or a mountain. Some families divide them: a small keepsake urn or a piece of jewellery each, which we arrange with the ashes here so nobody has to handle them at home. Scatterings on the Gower, at Pembrey, on the Black Mountain or at sea from Burry Port are all common and we know the rules and the people for each; we can be there, or you can go alone with our advice.

For burial of ashes there is the garden of remembrance at the crematorium, the family grave if there is one, or a new plot in a council cemetery or the natural burial ground at Pentre Ifan. Headstones and memorial inscriptions are through Gareth at the stonemason's in Burry Port, who comes to our rooms by appointment; we take no commission, and we tell you that because some do. Memorial benches, plaques and the book of remembrance at the crematorium we arrange too, at the fees those places charge.

Questions about ashes and memorials

Can we scatter ashes anywhere?

Almost: you need the landowner's permission, and there are sensible rules near water supplies and footpaths. The Gower beaches, the Brecon hills and the sea off Burry Port are all fine. Rivers need a word with the Environment Agency, which we do for you.

Do we have to decide at the funeral?

No. The ashes can stay with us for months or years; several families have theirs here now. Nothing is lost by waiting.

If you need us, ring. Any hour, one of us answers.

For a death that has just happened, the number below rings Eleri, Catrin or Huw day or night, and we can be with you within the hour. For anything that can wait, the form on the contact page is answered the same working day, and plans, prices and what to do first each have their own page.
