Walking to running

Eight weeks on the canal towpath and round the boating lake, walking with short slow jogs that grow a little every week.

Eight weeks along the canal and round the lake, twice a week, £60 for the course

This is not a race plan. It is a gentle way for people who already walk for thirty minutes to find out that they can jog for a minute, then three, then ten, without hurting themselves or hating it.

Week one is mostly brisk walking with six one-minute jogs, slower than you think a jog should be. Each week adds a little, and by week eight most people jog for twenty minutes with a couple of walking breaks. If a week was too much, you repeat it; nobody is left behind, because a coach walks at the back.

Tuesday sessions meet at 6:15pm at the canal bridge by the Five Locks car park and use the flat, lit towpath; Saturday sessions meet at 9am at the boating lake café and go round the lake and Llantarnam Park. Wear trainers you already own; we talk about whether you need new ones in week four, not before.

If you have heart or joint problems, are getting over an injury, or have been told by a doctor not to exercise hard, please check with your GP before you book. Running is not for every body, and walking briskly does almost as much good.

What is included

  • Sixteen coached sessions over eight weeks
  • A coach at the back, always
  • A printed week-by-week plan for the days in between
  • A warm-up and stretch routine
  • A free place on the Saturday lake walk afterwards

What it costs

£60 for the eight-week course, two coached sessions a week. The next course starts on the date shown on the home page. The energy estimate gives a starting range with every assumption shown, and the habit sheet is free to print whether or not you train with us.

Questions about walking to running

How fit do I need to be?

If you can walk briskly for thirty minutes without stopping, you are ready.

What if I miss a week?

Repeat the previous week on your own using the plan, or come along and we adjust it on the night.

Is it safe if I am heavy?

The jogs are short and slow and the surfaces are flat. If your knees or hips complain we swap jogs for faster walking. Check with your GP first if you have any doubt.
