The team

Four locksmiths, all checked.

There is no licence for locksmiths in Britain, so we do what a licence would: an enhanced DBS check every year for every one of us, photo ID with the shop number, marked vans, a text with the name and photo before we arrive, and the Master Locksmiths Association inspecting the shop. The certificates are on the wall and you can ask to see them.

The people

Gareth Hopkins, a Welsh locksmith in his mid-forties with short dark hair greying at the temples, in a navy work jacket with a tool bag, in front of a white van

Gareth Hopkins

Owner. Lockouts, burglary repairs, safes, and the phone at 3am

Served his time with a locksmith in Cardiff, spent six years on the road for a national firm, and opened the shop on Caerleon Road in 2012 because he was tired of telling people prices he knew were wrong. Gareth takes most of the night calls, does the safes and the burglary work, and wrote the price promise. Enhanced DBS checked, renewed every year, and the certificate is on the wall of the shop.

Ffion Lloyd, a locksmith in her early thirties with auburn hair tied back, in a navy polo shirt and tool belt, in a workshop with a key-cutting machine and a wall of key blanks

Ffion Lloyd

Locksmith. Car keys, lock fitting, uPVC, and the shop

Came to the trade from motor engineering, which is why the car keys are hers, and qualified through the Master Locksmiths Association in 2019. Ffion runs the shop and the key cutting, does most of the booked lock fitting and uPVC repairs, and takes the day calls. Enhanced DBS checked, renewed yearly; her name and photo come to your phone when she sets off.

The checks

What "checked" means here, line by line.

Enhanced DBS, yearly

The highest level of criminal-record check, renewed every year for all four locksmiths because we work in homes, care homes and schools. The certificates, with the dates, are on the wall of the shop. Ask.

Photo ID you can verify

Each of us carries a card with a photo, a name and the shop's number. Ring the shop and whoever answers will confirm the person on your step is ours and is meant to be there.

Marked vans and a text

Two vans with our name on them, and a text to your phone with the locksmith's name, photo and arrival time before they set off. An unmarked car and no text is not us.

The Association

Members of the Master Locksmiths Association, which vets, inspects and can throw us out. Ffion and Gareth hold its qualifications; the two others are working through them.

A locksmith crouched beside an opened home safe in a study, tools laid on a cloth, an older woman watching with relief

Rhodri and Ben

The two you have not met yet, and who takes which call.

Rhodri joined in 2018 from a joinery background and does most of the wooden-door work, the mortice locks and the burglary repairs on the day shift; Ben came in 2022 as an apprentice and now takes daytime lockouts and the uPVC work across Cwmbran and Risca. Gareth and Rhodri split the nights; Ffion and Ben the days. Whoever answers the phone can see who is nearest, and that is who comes.

What happens when you ring

Locked out? Ring. Anything else, book a slot.

The emergency line is answered by one of us, 24 hours a day, and a lockout is a fixed price on the phone before anyone leaves the van. For a lock change, a uPVC repair, a car key or a safe, the booking form takes two minutes and we reply within the working day with a two-hour slot.
