A door realigned and serviced £55; a new multipoint mechanism from £165; window locks from £35

uPVC doors and windows

The door that has to be lifted to lock, the handle that has gone floppy, the key that turns but nothing happens, the window that will not lock: most are the mechanism, the hinges or the alignment, not the whole door. We carry the common mechanisms, gearboxes, handles and hinges on the van and fix most of them in one visit at a price on this page.

Double-glazing companies will tell you the door needs replacing. Usually it needs a gearbox, a pair of hinges or ten minutes with an Allen key. The multipoint mechanism in a uPVC or composite door is a strip of hooks and rollers driven by a small gearbox behind the handle; the gearbox is the part that fails, the strip is the part that jams when the door drops, and both are replaceable.

A door that needs lifting to lock, or where the handle has to be forced, has usually dropped on its hinges so the hooks no longer meet the keeps. A realignment and service (£55) adjusts the hinges and keeps, lubricates the mechanism and often adds years. A handle that flops or a key that turns without the hooks moving is a failed gearbox: from £95 fitted, in one visit, because we carry the common ones. A mechanism that has broken a hook or jammed solid is replaced as a whole strip, from £165, matched to the door's dimensions.

Windows are simpler: a handle (£35 to £55 fitted, keyed or not), a shoot-bolt mechanism, a friction hinge that has gone stiff or loose. We also fit sash jammers and restrictors for ground-floor and child-safety work, and we will say if a window is beyond a lock fix and needs a glazier.

Questions about uPVC doors

The door locks but only if I lift the handle hard. Is that urgent?

It is the door telling you the gearbox is about to go, usually at night in the rain. A £55 service now is cheaper than a £99 night call-out and a gearbox later.

Can you make my patio doors more secure?

Yes: a patio lock or a pair of them (£45 fitted), anti-lift blocks and, on older doors, a new cylinder. Sliding doors are the weakest point of most houses.

Locked out? Ring. Anything else, book a slot.

The emergency line is answered by one of us, 24 hours a day, and a lockout is a fixed price on the phone before anyone leaves the van. For a lock change, a uPVC repair, a car key or a safe, the booking form takes two minutes and we reply within the working day with a two-hour slot.
