From old rewirable fuses to RCBO boards

Fuse board and consumer unit upgrades

Replacing old fuse boxes and plastic consumer units with a metal-clad board with RCD protection on every circuit, in a day, with the certificate and the building control notification.

The fuse board is the one thing in the house that is there to stop a fault becoming a fire or a shock. If yours has rewirable fuses, a wooden back or no RCD, it is doing half the job.

We fit metal-clad consumer units with an RCBO on every circuit, so a fault on the shower does not take out the freezer, and a surge protection device as standard. Upgrading the earthing and bonding to current standards is included where it is needed, which on older houses it usually is.

Every board change is tested circuit by circuit, which sometimes finds a fault that has been hiding behind an old fuse for years. We tell you, quote it, and fix it the same day where we can. You get an electrical installation certificate and the building control notification is done by us through our scheme.

A straightforward board change is half a day with the power off for three to four hours. We book it for a morning and leave you with a labelled board and a photo of what came out.

Questions about fuse boards

Do I have to change my fuse board?

Not by law, in an owner-occupied house. But an EICR on a board with no RCD protection will be unsatisfactory for a rented one, and insurers are starting to ask. If the board has rewirable fuses, a wooden back board or scorch marks, change it.

What is an RCBO?

A device that combines the overload protection of a circuit breaker with the shock protection of an RCD, one per circuit. The older arrangement puts one RCD across several circuits, so one fault trips them all.
