Where we walk

Six places, all within twenty minutes.

Mornings in Pontcanna Fields, afternoons in Llandaff Fields or Bute Park, the Taff Trail when the fields are flooded, Thompson's Park for the dogs who want quiet, and the woods below Castell Coch on Wednesdays. The walk is timed from the gate, so the van never eats it.

The six routes

A dog walker with four dogs on leads on a tree-lined avenue in Pontcanna FieldsMorning groups

Pontcanna Fields

Pontcanna

  • 4 min from the base
  • Grass and gravel

The big one: the avenue of limes, the open fields, the river bank. Mornings, before the football. Off-lead for the dogs with a recall, and a long line for the rest.

Llandaff Fields

Llandaff

  • 8 min from the base
  • Grass and tarmac

Across the road from Pontcanna: the tennis-court end for the sniffers, the top field for the runners, the water fountain by the pavilion where we stop halfway.

Bute Park

City centre

  • 12 min from the base
  • Tarmac and grass

In through Blackweir, down the arboretum side, back along the river. Busier than the fields, so leads near the cafe, and the best trees in Cardiff for a dog who likes squirrels.

The Taff Trail

Riverside to Llandaff

  • 6 min from the base
  • Gravel path

The flood-proof walk. Llandaff weir to Blackweir and back on the gravel, on leads, when the fields are under water. Solo walks for the dogs who like a straight line.

Thompson's Park

Canton

  • 9 min from the base
  • Tarmac paths

Small, quiet and railed, with a pond and benches. Where the old dogs go for a slow lap and the reactive ones go at eight in the morning when it is empty.

Castell Coch and the Garth

Out of the city

  • 20 min from the base
  • Woodland and hill

Wednesdays. Twenty minutes in the van, three hours in the beech woods below the castle or up the Garth for the view. Four fit dogs with a recall, home muddy.

When the Taff comes up

The fields flood four or five times a winter. The walk still happens.

Pontcanna and Llandaff Fields sit on the river's floodplain and go under water after a wet week. When they do, the groups walk the Taff Trail from Llandaff weir to Blackweir on leads, which is gravel, drains, and has the trees for shelter; the solos go to Thompson's Park or the Canton streets. Every dog comes back towelled, and on a red weather warning we cancel, tell you by seven, and do not charge.

  • Flooded fields: the Taff Trail, on leads, same hour
  • Heavy rain: shorter loops under the trees, a dry towel at your door
  • Red warning: cancelled by 7am, no charge
