About us

A bricklayer, a surveyor and a carpenter.

Morgan & Reed is the three of us and a core team of eleven trades who have worked together for years. We do not subcontract the structure, the roof or the finish, which is why the programme holds.

How it started

Gareth ran sites for a national housebuilder and got tired of watching good trades rushed by a programme set in an office two hundred miles away. Claire was the quantity surveyor pricing those sites. In 2008 they rented a unit in Taffs Well, bought a van and took on a rear extension in Whitchurch with a contract Claire wrote herself: a fixed price, a dated programme, and a promise to say in writing before anything changed.

Seventeen years and three hundred and forty projects later the contract is longer and the team is bigger, but the three promises are the same, and the Friday note with photos that Claire started sending in the first month still goes out every Friday.

Our own trades

Bricklayers, carpenters, roofers, plasterers, an electrician and a plumber are employed by us and have been for years. We bring in specialists for steel fabrication, glazing, cornice work and polished concrete, always the same firms. It means the same faces on your job from the first course to the last coat, and nobody to blame but us.

What we will not do

  • Start a job without a signed contract and a dated programme.
  • Do extra work without a written price agreed first.
  • Leave a site without the certificates: building control, electrical, gas, glazing and the structural warranty.
  • Take on more jobs than the team can run properly. Sometimes that means a start date three months away, and we tell you that at the first visit.

The people

Who you will deal with.

Gareth Morgan

Co-founder, site and structure

Gareth served his time as a bricklayer in Caerphilly, ran sites for a national housebuilder for a decade and started Morgan & Reed with Claire in 2008. He does the first visit, the structural decisions and most of the setting out, and still lays the first course on every extension.

Claire Reed

Co-founder, projects and contracts

Claire is a quantity surveyor by training and the reason our prices are line by line and our programmes are dated. She writes every contract, runs the planning and building regulations submissions, and sends the Friday notes.

Josh Pritchard

Site foreman

Josh joined as an apprentice carpenter in 2012 and has run our sites since 2019. He is the face you see every day, the one who keeps the site tidy, and the person who makes sure the plasterer is not in before the electrician is out.

Insurance and warranty

Covered, in writing.

£5 million public liability and £10 million employer's liability, certificates available before you sign. Every extension, loft and new build comes with a ten-year insurance-backed structural warranty from an independent provider, which stays valid even if we were to stop trading. Everything else carries our own two-year guarantee on top of the manufacturers' warranties.
