Included in every package: the spring review, the July and January calls, the year-end meeting

Tax planning and year end

Not a separate service and not an hourly one: every package includes a review each spring of how you pay yourself, a call in July and January to say what the tax bill will be, a year-end meeting with the accounts in front of us, and an honest answer to "should I buy the van before April".

A wall calendar and a lever-arch folder on a desk beside a window, a cup of coffee and a pen laid across an open diary

The best tax planning for a small business is boring: the right salary, the pension contribution in the right year, the van bought before the year end rather than after, the right spouse owning the right shares. None of it needs a specialist; it needs someone looking at your figures in March rather than next January. That is in the package.

Each spring, when the thresholds change, Nia or Tom reviews every client's position in one page: salary and dividends for directors, whether the business should make a pension contribution before its year end, whether a capital purchase should be brought forward for the full expensing or annual investment allowance, and whether the VAT scheme is still the right one. In July and January, before the payments on account, you get a call with the figure and the date so the money is set aside. At year end we sit down with the accounts and talk about the year ahead rather than the one behind.

The bigger questions get a fixed fee quoted first: selling or closing the company, taking a property portfolio into a company (the sums rarely work, and we show you why), a capital gain on a second home, incorporating a partnership. We will not let you pay for a tax scheme; if something is sold to you as one, send it to us and we will tell you plainly whether it is the kind HMRC unwinds a decade later.

What is included

  • A one-page spring review for every client
  • July and January calls with the tax figure
  • A year-end meeting, in person or video
  • Purchase timing and allowances worked out
  • Fixed fees for the bigger questions, quoted first
  • A straight answer on anything sold to you as a scheme

What it costs

Included in every package. Bigger one-off questions (selling the business, incorporating a property portfolio, a capital gain) are quoted as a fixed fee before we start. Package prices are a month, plus VAT at 20%, month to month after the first year. The prices page has the three packages side by side, what is in each, and every extra.

Questions about tax planning

Should I buy the van before the year end?

If the profit is there and you need the van, usually yes: a new commercial vehicle gets 100% relief in the year of purchase. If you are buying it to save tax rather than to use it, no, because you spend a pound to save twenty-five pence. We will tell you which applies.

Can you save me more tax than my last accountant?

Sometimes, if they were not looking. Mostly the saving is in avoiding penalties and surprises, and in the salary-and-dividend plan being updated every year. We would rather say that than promise a number.

Pick a package, or ask which one fits.

Sole trader or landlord £45 a month, limited company £125, VAT-registered £195, all plus VAT, everything in. Tell us what the business is and where you are with it and one of the three of us rings back the same working day with a straight answer, including which package you do not need.
