A single-fronted shop £15 a visit weekly or fortnightly, before you open; offices and showrooms quoted by the pane

Shops, offices and showrooms

The shops on Llandaff High Street, Cowbridge Road, Whitchurch Village and Rhiwbina, done before they open: a single-fronted shop £15 a visit weekly or fortnightly, the door and the fanlight included, a double front £24, an invoice once a month. Offices, showrooms, cafés, surgeries and schools quoted by the pane after a look, inside glass at £2 a pane.

A window cleaner squeegeeing the large plate-glass front of an independent shop on a Cardiff high street at seven in the morning, the street empty

A shopfront is a different job from a house: it is traditional, with an applicator and a squeegee, because the glass is at ground level and the customer wants to see it gleam, not dry. We start at half past six and the high streets are done before the first customer. The door, the fanlight, the brass kick-plate and the sill are in the price, and the cleaner carries a card for the manager with the date of each visit so the head office can see we came.

Weekly is the usual pattern for food, hairdressers and anything with a window display; fortnightly for the solicitors and the estate agents. We do about ninety shops across the four districts on four morning rounds and we are at the same shop within the same half hour each visit, which matters if you want to let us into a lobby. Sickness cover is the owner, so the round does not miss a week.

Offices, showrooms, surgeries, nurseries and schools are quoted after a walk round, by the pane for the outside and the inside separately, with a frequency that suits the building: a car showroom wants its glass weekly, a surgery monthly, a school in each holiday. Pure-water poles reach the third floor from the car park; above that is a platform or a cradle and we quote it. Invoices go out monthly with the visit dates on them, on thirty-day terms.

Questions about commercial

Can you do a whole parade?

Yes, and the price per shop drops when we do a run of them, because the van parks once. Ask the neighbours; the Llandaff High Street parade is one round.

Do you need keys or access?

Not for the outside. For inside glass we arrange a key holder or come when you are open, and every cleaner is DBS-checked for the schools and surgeries.

Your street has a day. Your house has a price.

The rounds page gives the day and the next date for your postcode; the prices page turns a window count into the figure. Send the form or a text and Lowri replies the same working day, and your first clean goes on the next round through your street.
