Food by the week, not the bag.

A small pet shop on Hannah Street, Porth. Bring the dog and we will weigh it, work out what it eats, and sell you the right bag. Sometimes that is the small one.

What we do

Six aisles, one small shop.

All six

01

Pet food

Dry food in three bag sizes, tins and pouches, and raw from the freezer. We stock what we would feed our own, and tell you what a bag costs by the week.

Dry dog food from £7.50 for 2 kg.

02

Small animals

Hay by the bale or the bag, bedding, hutches to order, and plain advice before you buy. We keep a few rabbits and guinea pigs from local breeders, for homes that are ready.

Meadow hay from £4 a bag.

03

Fish and aquatics

Twelve planted freshwater tanks, coldwater and tropical, kept by Dylan. Bring a water sample in a clean jar and he will test it for free, while you wait.

Water tests are free.

04

Treats and toys

Natural chews from wooden bins, sold by weight. Rope toys, balls and tug toys we have tested on Rhian’s collie, who has destroyed a good many of the alternatives.

Chews from 50p each.

05

Flea and worming

Flea and worm treatments are dosed by weight, so we weigh your animal, ask a few questions and give you the right one. Rhian is the shop’s qualified adviser; your vet handles prescription-only products.

Spot-on flea treatment from £6.50 a dose.

06

Local delivery

Dylan does two rounds a week in the van. Free within three miles of the shop on orders over £25, and he will carry it up the steps and put it where you want.

Free within 3 miles over £25.

The sum

A 30 kg dog on the 12 kg sack.

That dog eats about 346 g a day of our Cwm Everyday. The 12 kg sack costs £33 and lasts 34 days, so it comes to £6.66 a week.

The sticker on the sack tells you little. What matters is how much you feed, how big the bag is, and how long the last of it stays fresh. So we do the sum, for any dog or cat and any of our foods, and we do it the same way at the counter.

Do the sum for yours

How we work

Why people keep coming back.

We sell food by what it costs a week

The price on the sack tells you little. A cheap food fed by the double scoop is often dearer than a good one fed by the single. Our calculator shows the weekly cost, and so will Rhian at the counter.

We will talk you down

If your dog is thriving on what you feed it, we will not sell you something else. If you only need the small bag, we will sell you the small bag. Most of our customers have been coming for years for that reason.

Animals come first

We do not sell puppies or kittens and never will. The rabbits, guinea pigs and fish we do keep go to homes that have a hutch or a tank ready, and we will ask you about it before we take your money.

We carry it

Hannah Street is flat and the rest of the Rhondda is not. A 12 kg sack on a terrace with thirty steps is what the van is for: Tuesdays and Fridays, to the door, and up the steps if you ask.

The van

Thirty-one steps is what it is for.

Tuesday and Friday mornings, up and down the two valleys. Free within three miles on orders over £25, and £3 as far as Tonypandy, Tylorstown and Tonyrefail.

Dylan carries it in, up the steps, and puts it wherever you say. A standing order every four or six weeks means nobody has to remember.

Food

I went in for the big sack because it looked cheaper. Rhian weighed Bryn, did the sum on the back of a till roll, and sold me the small one. She said he would never finish the big one before it went stale. Who does that?

Delivery

We have thirty-one steps up to the front door. Dylan brings the dog food up every six weeks, puts it in the shed and says hello to the dog. My back has never been better.

Fish

My son had his birthday money and wanted fish that day. Dylan was very nice and would not sell him any. He sold us a tank, told us to come back in a month, and tested the water for free three times. They are all still alive.

Questions people ask

What does your food cost?

Dry dog food starts at £7.50 for 2 kg and £33 for a 12 kg sack. What it costs you by the week depends on the size of the dog, and the food cost calculator works it out.

Do you deliver?

Yes, on Tuesdays and Fridays, free within three miles on orders over £25, and £3 further up the valleys. We carry it in, up the steps if there are any.

Can I bring my dog in?

Please do. On a lead, and we will weigh it for nothing. Moss will probably be under the till and she will ignore you both.

Do you sell puppies or kittens?

No, and we never will. We keep a few rabbits and guinea pigs from local breeders, and fish, and we ask questions before selling them. For a dog or cat, try a rescue: we will happily tell you which ones.

How does the loyalty card work?

One stamp for each bag of food over £5. Ten stamps and the next 2 kg bag of the same food is free. It is a paper card. You can check where you are if you have lost count.

Can you advise on flea and worming?

Yes. Rhian is the shop’s Suitably Qualified Person. She weighs your animal, asks a few questions and gives you the right dose. Anything prescription-only or anything for an ill animal goes to your vet.

Bring the dog in. We will weigh it for nothing.

Or put in a weight and a food, and see which bag, how long it lasts and what it costs a week.
