Steel or timber doors that open like a pair of gates

Side-hinged doors

Side-hinged garage doors in steel or timber, opening like a pair of doors, for older garages, outbuildings and garages you walk into more than you drive into.

A pair of sage green timber side-hinged garage doors on a stone outbuilding, one leaf open

If you mostly walk into your garage to get the bike or the mower out, a side-hinged door makes more sense than any up-and-over: open one leaf and go in.

We fit insulated steel side-hinged doors, which look like a traditional pair of doors and need no maintenance, and timber doors in redwood or hardwood for older houses and outbuildings where steel would look wrong. Either can be split equally or unequally, so the everyday leaf is wider, with a multipoint lock on the active leaf and shoot bolts on the other.

Side-hinged doors need room on the drive for the leaves to swing; we check the slope, because a drive that rises towards the garage can stop them opening fully. Timber doors arrive primed or stained and need a coat every few years; we say so honestly.

Questions about side-hinged doors

Can side-hinged doors be electric?

Not by us: automation of swinging doors on a drive needs a lot of space and safety equipment. A roller or sectional is the better electric choice.

Steel or timber?

Steel for no maintenance and insulation; timber for older houses and conservation areas. We have both in the showroom.

Will they open on my sloping drive?

We measure the slope; if it rises, the doors can be hung to clear it or set slightly inside the opening.

Jodie or Mark measures the opening, the headroom and the side room, shows you samples, and leaves a written quote with fitting and the old door taken away. Or visit the showroom on the Avondale estate and try the doors.
