Waterproof, warm and quiet: kitchens, halls and bathrooms

Luxury vinyl tile

Stone and wood-effect tiles and planks with a commercial wear layer, glued to a floor we level first, or rigid click LVT over an underlay. The floor most of our kitchens, halls and bathrooms get, and the one dogs cannot hurt.

Luxury vinyl tile is the floor that changed what we fit. Twenty years ago a kitchen got ceramic tiles or cushioned vinyl; now most of them get LVT, because it looks like stone or oak, it is waterproof, it is warm and quiet underfoot, and a dropped glass usually bounces. It is also the floor least bothered by dogs.

There are two kinds. Glue-down LVT is thin and flexible and goes on a floor we have levelled with a latex compound first, so every lump in the screed would show through if we skipped it. That is the price in the measurer: the levelling, the primer, the adhesive and the fitting. Rigid click LVT has a stiff core and clicks together over an underlay, so it forgives a less perfect floor and costs a little less to fit.

We carry two ranges in the shop with wear layers of 0.55 mm, which is commercial grade: the same stuff that goes in a busy shop. Either can go in a wet room or over underfloor heating. The patterns include herringbone and chevron planks, and stone tiles with a grout strip laid between them so it looks like the real thing.

What is included

  • The subfloor checked and levelled with latex
  • A 0.55 mm commercial wear layer
  • Herringbone, chevron, plank and stone-tile layouts
  • Sealed edges in kitchens and bathrooms
  • Over underfloor heating, with the right adhesive
  • Cut round the kitchen plinths, or under them if they come off

What it costs

From £56 a square metre fitted for a glued commercial-grade LVT, including levelling. Rigid click LVT from £48. Including VAT. The room measurer works out your room in luxury vinyl tile, with the roll or the packs we would order.

Questions about luxury vinyl tile

Glue-down or click?

Glue-down for kitchens and bathrooms, where it is fully waterproof and quieter; click for living rooms and bedrooms on a decent floor, where it is quicker to fit and a little cheaper.

Can it go over my old tiles?

Often, after we fill the grout lines and level over them. We will check the tiles are sound at the home measure.

Start with the home measure. It is free.

Rhian or Lewis measures every room with a laser, checks the floor underneath and every door, leaves the samples with you, and writes the quote before they leave. Usually within three working days.
