The website said £625 for our back bedroom in the oatmeal twist, 4.2 by 3.6, off a 4 metre roll. Rhian measured, checked the door, and the quote was £625. Lewis fitted it on the Thursday and took the old one away. That never happens.

Luxury vinyl tile

Kitchen and utility in LVT with two Labradors. They levelled the floor first, which took a morning we had not expected, and Lewis explained why. Two years on there is not a mark on it, and the dogs have tried.

Wood

Herringbone in a Victorian hall, down to the front door, with the old hardboard up and ply laid first. It looks as if it has always been there. Rhian talked us into oil rather than lacquer, and she was right.

Landlord

Three rented flats, sheet vinyl in the bathrooms and laminate everywhere else, all done between tenants in one week. Two bathrooms came out of remnants in the back of the shop, which saved about £150.

Lovely carpet and a tidy fitter. Four stars because the lounge door rubbed on the new underlay and had to be trimmed a week later; it was not on the quote. They came back the next Monday at no charge and they now check every door on the measure.

Whole house

Stairs, landing and three bedrooms in one day. They joined the landing and the box room off one cut so there was less waste, and showed me on the quote where the money went.

About the four stars

The lounge door rubbed. Every door is checked on the measure now.

Sian's new carpet was on a thicker underlay than the old one, and the lounge door caught it. It should have been on the quote; it was not, because nobody had opened that door at the measure. Lewis went back the next Monday, took it off and trimmed it at no charge. Since then the home measure includes every door in every room, and a door that needs trimming is on the quote at £20, before anyone is surprised.
