The old floor up and awayWe take up the old carpet, gripper, laminate or vinyl and take it away for £3 a square metre, and we move the furniture back. Most of it goes to a carpet recycler in Port Talbot, not landfill.

Floors

Five floors we fit, and the measure that comes first.

All six

01

Carpets

Two hundred carpets in the shop, from a £12 polypropylene for a rental to an 80/20 wool twist that lasts twenty years, fitted on a 10 mm underlay with new gripper and door bars. Stairs, landings and the awkward bits included.

From £37 a square metre fitted for a good mid-range twist with underlay and gripper; budget carpets from £25 fitted.

02

Luxury vinyl tile

Stone and wood-effect tiles and planks with a commercial wear layer, glued to a floor we level first, or rigid click LVT over an underlay. The floor most of our kitchens, halls and bathrooms get, and the one dogs cannot hurt.

From £56 a square metre fitted for a glued commercial-grade LVT, including levelling.

03

Laminate

Eight and twelve millimetre laminate at AC4, the wear grade that copes with a family, a dog and kitchen chairs, on an underlay with a damp-proof layer. Water-resistant boards for kitchens, and an acoustic underlay upstairs.

From £33 a square metre fitted for an 8 mm AC4 board with underlay; 12 mm water-resistant boards from £41.

04

Real and engineered wood

Engineered oak with a 3 or 4 mm top layer that can be sanded twice, solid oak where the floor allows it, and herringbone for Victorian halls. Brushed, lacquered or oiled, floated on an underlay or glued down, with the doors and thresholds finished properly.

From £75 a square metre fitted for 14 mm engineered oak with underlay.

05

Sheet vinyl

Cushioned vinyl in one sheet off a 4 or 5 metre roll, so there is no seam for water to find: the safest floor for a bathroom, the cheapest good floor for a utility room, and the one landlords ask for. Fitted in an hour or two.

From £26 a square metre fitted.

06

The free home measure

Rhian or Lewis comes to the house with a laser, a moisture meter and a bag of samples, measures every room, checks the subfloor and the doors, and leaves a written quote that lists every piece we would cut. Free, and usually within three working days.

Which floor?

Pick the room. Tick the dog. We will say what we would put down.

Carpet in a kitchen, laminate in a bathroom and lacquered oak with a Labrador are the three mistakes we are asked to fix most. The floor finder scores every floor for every room, adjusted for pets and children, and says why in a sentence.

How we work

Four things true of every room we fit.

We order what the room needs

Carpet and vinyl come off a 4 or 5 metre roll, so a room 3.6 metres wide uses a 4 metre width and you pay for the strip. The measurer shows that waste, and the quote shows it again, so the extra is never a surprise on the invoice.

The subfloor checked first

A floor is only as flat as what is under it. We check boards for squeaks and concrete for damp before we quote, and if it needs ply or a levelling compound we say so on the quote, priced, rather than on the fitting day.

Samples in your own light

The shop on Nolton Street has two hundred carpets and a wall of planks, but the home measure brings the shortlist to the room, because a grey that looks warm under our lights can look cold in a north-facing lounge.

Doors that still close

A new carpet with a thick underlay can be 15 millimetres higher than the old one. We check every door on the measure, and if one needs taking off and trimming, it is on the quote and the fitter does it on the day.

The home measure

An hour in the house, a laser in every room, and the quote before we leave.

Most floors go wrong at the measuring: the room that was not square, the door that will not close over a thicker underlay, the concrete that was damp. So Rhian or Lewis measures every job, checks the floor underneath with a moisture meter and every door for clearance, and leaves the samples you liked so you can see them in the morning and the evening. The written quote lists every piece we would cut, and it stands for sixty days.

Carpet

The website said £625 for our back bedroom in the oatmeal twist, 4.2 by 3.6, off a 4 metre roll. Rhian measured, checked the door, and the quote was £625. Lewis fitted it on the Thursday and took the old one away. That never happens.

Luxury vinyl tile

Kitchen and utility in LVT with two Labradors. They levelled the floor first, which took a morning we had not expected, and Lewis explained why. Two years on there is not a mark on it, and the dogs have tried.

Gareth and MelCoity
Wood

Herringbone in a Victorian hall, down to the front door, with the old hardboard up and ply laid first. It looks as if it has always been there. Rhian talked us into oil rather than lacquer, and she was right.

Questions people ask before the measure

What does a carpet cost for a bedroom?

For a typical 4 by 3.6 metre bedroom in a good mid-range twist on a 10 mm underlay, about £600 fitted, because the room takes a 4 metre width off the roll. The room measurer works it out for any room and any floor.

Is the home measure really free?

Yes, and there is no obligation. Rhian or Lewis measures, checks the subfloor and the doors, and leaves a written quote that stands for sixty days.

How soon can you fit?

Carpets and vinyl in stock are usually fitted within a week of the measure; ordered carpets, LVT and wood take one to three weeks to arrive.

Do you take the old floor away?

Yes, for £3 a square metre, and we move the furniture and put it back for nothing. Old carpet goes to a recycler in Port Talbot.

Why do I pay for more carpet than my room?

Because carpet and sheet vinyl come off 4 and 5 metre rolls. A room 3.6 metres wide still uses a 4 metre width. The measurer shows that waste, and we look for remnants and shared cuts to bring it down.

What if something goes wrong after?

Our fitting is guaranteed for two years: a lifted seam, a loose door bar or a clicking board is a visit within the week at no charge. The flooring carries its maker's guarantee.
