Twist, loop, saxony and wool, on a proper underlay

Carpets

Two hundred carpets in the shop, from a £12 polypropylene for a rental to an 80/20 wool twist that lasts twenty years, fitted on a 10 mm underlay with new gripper and door bars. Stairs, landings and the awkward bits included.

The carpet is about half of what makes a carpet feel good. The other half is underlay, and it is the half that shops cut to make a price look low. We fit a 10 mm polyurethane underlay as standard, on new gripper, because a mid-range carpet on a good underlay feels and wears better than an expensive carpet on a thin one.

In the shop on Nolton Street there are about two hundred carpets on the rolls and the sample stands: twists for living rooms, loop piles for halls and offices, saxonies for bedrooms, and wool and wool-mix for anyone who wants it to last. We will tell you which pile hides the dog, which shows every footprint, and which one is the same carpet as the one round the corner in a different name for £8 a metre more.

Carpet comes off a 4 metre or a 5 metre roll, so the width of your room decides how much you buy. A room 3.6 metres wide uses a 4 metre width and leaves a strip; a room 4.3 metres wide uses a 5 metre width or a seam. The room measurer on this website works that out for you, and the quote after the home measure shows it again, piece by piece. Where we can join two rooms off one cut, we do.

On the day, Lewis or one of the fitters takes up the old carpet, lays new gripper, fits the underlay and the carpet, trims the doors if they need it, fits the door bars and hoovers up. A bedroom takes a couple of hours; a whole house with stairs is a day.

What is included

  • A free home measure with samples
  • A 10 mm PU underlay and new gripper as standard

What it costs

Questions about carpets

Wool or polypropylene?

Wool springs back and lasts; polypropylene is stain-proof, bleach-cleanable and cheaper. With a dog or young children we usually recommend polypropylene for the living room and wool for the stairs, which take the most wear.

Can you fit a carpet I bought elsewhere?

Yes, at the same fitting rate, though we cannot guarantee the carpet itself. Please let us measure first so you buy the right width.

Start with the home measure. It is free.

Rhian or Lewis measures every room with a laser, checks the floor underneath and every door, leaves the samples with you, and writes the quote before they leave. Usually within three working days.
