After the physio has finished: a twelve-week bridge from rehab to strength, with the physio in the loop, £1,560

Return from injury

The gap nobody fills: the physio has discharged you, the knee or the shoulder or the back is "better", and you are frightened of it. Twelve weeks of weekly coaching that starts where the physio stopped, with their notes, their say on what is allowed, and a programme that rebuilds the strength the injury took, with reviews shared with them.

Physiotherapy gets a joint moving and out of pain; it rarely has the time or the kit to make it strong again, and a joint that is not strong gets hurt again. Mari came from sports rehabilitation and built this programme for the people her physio colleagues were discharging with a sheet of exercises and no idea what next. It is strength coaching with the physio still in the room, on paper.

It starts with a longer assessment and, with your permission, a conversation with your physio or consultant: what was done, what is allowed, what to avoid for now, what they would like to see at twelve weeks. The programme is written from that and shared with them. Sessions are weekly and one-to-one, with the homework in between; the first four weeks are mostly about trust, range and the pattern, the last eight about load.

Reviews at four, eight and twelve weeks are written up and sent to the physio, so if something is not right it is caught early by someone who can act on it. Most people move to a standard programme or semi-private afterwards, stronger than before the injury, which is the actual aim. We take knees, hips, shoulders, backs and the post-surgical cases a surgeon has signed off; we do not take anyone still in acute treatment.

What is included

  • A longer assessment with the physio's notes
  • Liaison with your physio or consultant, with your permission
  • Twelve weekly one-to-one sessions
  • Homework between sessions
  • Reviews at four, eight and twelve weeks, shared with the physio
  • Then the usual programmes, stronger than before

What it costs

£1,560 for twelve weeks: the assessment, liaison with your physio, a weekly coached session, the homework and three reviews. Then one-to-one or semi-private at the usual prices. The programmes page has every price side by side; the assessment page says what the first ninety minutes involve.

Questions about after injury

Do you replace the physio?

No. We start when they have finished and we keep them in the loop. If something needs a physio again we say so and stop.

My knee replacement was eight months ago. Too soon?

Probably not, if the surgeon has signed you off for loading; most are happy from six months. We ask them, with your permission, before we start.

Start with the assessment. Ninety minutes, and an honest answer.

Your story, the letters, how you move under a light bar, four baseline measures in a book you keep, and ten minutes on what it will take and whether we are the right people. £60, credited against a programme, and refunded if we say we are not.
