Posing

One light, one mirror.

Posing is the cheapest improvement in the sport and the one most people leave to the last fortnight. The studio at the back of the gym is where we fix that, an hour at a time.

Where we start

The six poses we teach first.

01

Front relaxed

Every category

Standing tall, not flexed hard, with the lats spread a little and the feet set. Judges look at this for longer than you think.

02

Quarter turns

Every category

Four sides of a relaxed stance, turning on the call. Each side should look like you meant it.

03

Front double biceps

Bodybuilding, classic, physique

Arms up, elbows level with the shoulders, the waist held in. The pose that starts most comparisons.

04

Side chest

Bodybuilding, classic

Choose your better side. The back leg bends, the chest lifts, the arm squeezes in.

05

Back double biceps

Bodybuilding, classic

Back to the judges, one calf set, arms up. Back width and detail, and the calves everyone forgets.

06

Model walk and turn

Bikini, figure, physique

Walk to the front, a front pose, a back pose, and walk off. Rehearsed until it is unremarkable.

How a session runs

An hour, filmed, with notes.

Ten minutes warming up and walking the platform. Thirty minutes on the poses for your category, one at a time, with the coach moving your hands, feet and chin until it looks right in the mirror. Fifteen minutes on transitions and quarter turns, because the judges see you walking between poses too. Five minutes of the whole run, filmed.

  • Wear your suit or trunks, or close-fitting shorts and a crop top or vest; no oil or tan
  • The studio is screened from the gym, the door closes, and only you and the coach are in it
  • Video and notes sent the same day

Come in or call for thirty minutes: your training, your history, the show you have in mind if you have one, and an honest answer about whether it is the right time. If it is not, we will say so and say what would change it.
