Plantation shutters

Made-to-measure shutters for bays, sash windows and patio doors, in hardwood, MDF or waterproof ABS. Six weeks to make, a day to fit, and they last as long as the house.

Shutters are the most expensive way to dress a window and the one people regret least. They control light and privacy better than anything else, they add something to the house, and they do not need replacing.

Every shutter is made to our measurements in about six weeks, from the style, material, louvre size and colour you choose at the home visit. Full-height shutters cover the whole window in one panel; tier-on-tier splits it so you can open the top and keep the bottom closed; café style covers only the lower half; tracked shutters slide across patio and French doors. Bays are measured at every angle, because no two Victorian bays in Penarth are the same.

We fit three materials: hardwood, which is light, strong and right for wide panels; MDF, which is cheaper and fine for most rooms that are not steamy; and ABS, which is waterproof and the only choice for bathrooms and kitchens. The shutters page explains each style and material with prices, and why we sometimes say no to a shutter on a door that is used every day.

What it includes

  • Bay, sash and patio door shutters
  • Hardwood, MDF or waterproof ABS
  • 47, 63, 76 or 89mm louvres
  • Hidden or front tilt rods
  • Made in about six weeks
  • Fitted in a day, frames included

What it costs

From £320 a square metre fitted, frames and fitting included. A typical Penarth bay is £1,600 to £2,200. The pricer works out a guide for your window size, and we confirm it once we have measured.

Questions about plantation shutters

How long do they take?

About six weeks from the measured order to fitting, eight in the run-up to Christmas. Fitting is usually a day for a whole house front.

Do shutters keep the heat in?

They help: a closed shutter traps a layer of air against the glass, and customers in older houses notice the difference in a bay. They are not a substitute for double glazing.

Can they go in a bathroom?

Yes, in waterproof ABS, which will not swell or warp. Hardwood and MDF are not suitable for rooms with showers.
