The team

Two engineers, four rooms.

Siân built the studio in 2015 after twelve years at other people's desks; Dylan built the podcast suite in 2021 after four years of live sound. Owain masters on Fridays. Between them they have engineered most of the sessions this building has heard.

Siân Rowlands

Owner and engineer. Bands, the live room, mixing

Twelve years as a staff engineer at studios in Bristol and London, recording everything from string quartets to punk bands, before coming home to Cardiff in 2015 to build the studio in the old cold store. Engineers most of the band sessions and a lot of the mixing, and still gets in an hour before every session to tune the snare. Thinks a first EP is the most important record a band makes.

Dylan Price

Engineer. Podcasts, video, voice-over

A music technology degree from the University of South Wales and four years running live sound in Cardiff venues before he came to Redbrick to build the podcast suite in 2021. Runs the cameras and the levels for most of the forty-one shows that record here, edits overnight, and does the voice-over and ADR sessions. Owain, who masters on Fridays, is on the rates page.

The warehouse

A fish merchant's cold store, with walls a foot thick.

Unit 12 was built in the 1890s for a merchant who brought fish up the Taff, and its cold store had the thickest walls on the embankment and no windows. Siân found it empty in 2014, spent a year building rooms inside it, and opened in the spring of 2015 with a borrowed desk and one band. The joinery next door has been the best neighbour a studio could ask for: they start at seven and stop at four.

The rooms

Pick the room and the hours. The price works itself out.

The live room is £45 an hour, never more than £150 for a half day or £300 for a day; an engineer £20 an hour on top, capped the same way. The book page does the sum and shows what is free today and tomorrow. Half the quote holds the date.
