Mixing and mastering

A box-in-box control room with a 32-channel console, a rack of outboard and monitors you can trust, for mixing what you recorded here or anywhere else: book the room and an engineer by the hour with the caps, or send us the stems and we quote per song. Mastering for streaming and vinyl at £35 a track or £120 for up to five.

A recording studio control room at night: a large mixing console with glowing meters, two studio monitors, a screen with waveforms and a window through to a dark live room

Recording is half of a record; the mix is where it becomes one. The mix room is a box built inside the warehouse on its own floor, so what you hear is the speakers and not the building, with a 32-channel analogue console, a rack of compressors and equalisers that we use because they sound good rather than because they look good, and two sets of monitors including a pair of the cheap ones everyone listens on.

Most bands mix with one of our engineers, a song at a time, in the room with them for the decisions and out of it for the hours of detail. A rough guide is half a day a song for a band record, less for sparse arrangements. Book by the hour with the caps, or send the stems and we quote per song, typically £120 to £200, with two rounds of revisions.

Mastering is done by Owain in the mix room on its own day: loudness matched for streaming without crushing the life out of it, sequenced and spaced for an EP or album, with masters for streaming, CD and vinyl cut as needed. £35 a track or £120 for up to five, one round of revisions, and a short note on what was done and why.

We mix work recorded elsewhere as happily as work recorded here; send a test song and we will tell you honestly whether the recordings will mix well or whether one or two parts would be better re-recorded. Files come back as WAVs at the session's resolution, with instrumental and a cappella versions on request.

Questions about mixing and mastering

Can you mix something we recorded at home?

Yes, most of what we mix was recorded somewhere else. Send one song first and we will say honestly how it will turn out and what, if anything, to re-record.

How loud will the master be?

Loud enough for streaming, where the platforms turn everything down to the same level anyway, and not so loud it loses its dynamics. We send a note with the numbers.

Pick the room and the hours. The price works itself out.

The live room is £45 an hour, never more than £150 for a half day or £300 for a day; an engineer £20 an hour on top, capped the same way. The book page does the sum and shows what is free today and tomorrow. Half the quote holds the date.
