A market town at the western edge of Bannau Brycheiniog

Llandovery and the Beacons

Llandovery is a small market town with a clock tower, a castle mound, a Friday market and the Heart of Wales railway, on the western edge of Bannau Brycheiniog: the Black Mountain and Llyn y Fan Fach twenty minutes away, Llyn Brianne to the north.

The market square of a small mid Wales town in early evening, a stone clock tower and Georgian houses in soft colours, a couple walking a dog

Llandovery is the kind of town where everyone says good morning, the bookshop knows what you read last time, and you can walk from the front door to the river in two minutes and to open hill in twenty.

In town: the castle mound and its steel statue, the market square with the clock tower, the Friday market, two good pubs and a restaurant within three minutes' walk, an independent bookshop, the heritage centre and the riverside path along the Towy. The Heart of Wales line stops here between Swansea and Shrewsbury, one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain.

Out of town: the Black Mountain, the wildest part of Bannau Brycheiniog, with Llyn y Fan Fach under its red escarpment twenty minutes' drive away; Llyn Brianne reservoir and the Cambrian Mountains to the north; the red kite feeding at Llanddeusant; and the National Botanic Garden of Wales and Carmarthen to the west.

Questions about llandovery and the Beacons

Do we need a car?

Not to enjoy the town, and the Heart of Wales line and the buses reach the valleys. For the Black Mountain, a car or Dafydd's lift makes life much easier.

Where should we eat?

The folder has our honest list. Book on a Friday or Saturday; Llandovery is small and the good tables go.

Pick a night, see which rooms are free.
