Staying with us

Six things worth knowing before you come.

All six

No. 1

The four rooms

Four rooms in a Georgian post office on Broad Street: the Sorting Office on the ground floor with its own courtyard door, the Telegraph Room over the old counter, Penny Black in the eaves, and the Postmaster's Room with a roll-top bath. Breakfast in every rate.

From £80 a night for Penny Black on a low-season weekday, breakfast for two included.

No. 2

Breakfast and local produce

Breakfast is the reason half our guests come back: bacon and sausage from the butcher on Stone Street, eggs from Myddfai, bread baked here at six, cockles and laverbread from Penclawdd, cooked to order and served in the old counter room.

Breakfast is included in every room rate.

No. 3

Walkers and cyclists

Llandovery sits between the Black Mountain, the Cambrian Mountains and Llyn Brianne. We have a heated drying room for boots and kit, a locked bike store with a stand, pump and hose, early breakfasts, packed lunches and Dafydd's routes.

The drying room, the bike store and the route folder are free to guests.

No. 4

Dogs welcome

One of our four rooms takes a dog: the Sorting Office on the ground floor, with its own glazed door to the courtyard so a dog can go out first thing without the stairs. A bed, bowls and towels, and walks from the door along the Towy.

£10 a dog a night, one dog (two small dogs by arrangement), in the Sorting Office only.

No. 5

Llandovery and the Beacons

Llandovery is a small market town with a clock tower, a castle mound, a Friday market and the Heart of Wales railway, on the western edge of Bannau Brycheiniog: the Black Mountain and Llyn y Fan Fach twenty minutes away, Llyn Brianne to the north.

Everything in this page is free to look at.

No. 6

Exclusive use

Take the whole house for a family gathering, a walking group, a cycling club or a small celebration: all four rooms for up to nine, breakfast for everyone, the breakfast room as your sitting room in the evening, and the drying room and bike store to yourselves.

£520 a night for all four rooms, breakfast for up to nine included, two nights minimum.

How we keep house

Four promises from a house with four rooms.

A room that is ready

Cleaned and checked by Ffion herself, heating on before you arrive, a tray with Welsh cakes, and the window open if you would rather.

Breakfast when you need it

From half past seven on weekdays, eight at the weekend, and an early tray at six for a long day on the hill if you ask the night before.

Fair if plans change

Cancel up to seven days before for nothing. Inside seven days we charge the first night only if we cannot re-let the room.

Walkers and cyclists

Boots dry by morning, bikes locked up, a packed lunch on the dresser.

The old strongroom is a heated drying room, the yard has a locked store for six bikes with a stand, a pump and a hose, and there is an early tray at six for a long day. Dafydd, twenty years on the mountain rescue team, has written the routes and will drop you at Llanddeusant for the Black Mountain when he can.

  • Llyn y Fan Fach and the Black Mountain, twenty minutes by car
  • The Llyn Brianne cycling loop from the front door
  • Packed lunches £9.50, ordered by nine the night before

Ffion and Dafydd

The post office closed in 2008. We opened the door again in 2016.

The town's post office for a hundred and twenty-six years, then seven years empty. We kept the counter, the brass letter plate, the sorting-room brick and the safe that would not move, and made four rooms upstairs and down. Ffion cooks the breakfasts and does the rooms; Dafydd does the bikes, the boots and the routes.

Postmaster's Room

A bath by the window looking down Broad Street, the quietest night's sleep we have had in years, and the best breakfast of our lives. The laverbread converted James. We have booked the same weekend next year.

Walker

Came for three days on the Black Mountain in March weather. Boots dry every morning in the drying room, a packed lunch on the dresser, and Dafydd dropped me at Llanddeusant on the wettest day. Exactly what a walker needs.

Dogs

The courtyard door made it so easy with a young dog, and Bella had her own towel and a biscuit on the bed. Breakfast at the hall table with her under it. Ffion and Mabli made her very welcome.

Finding us

On Broad Street, a minute from the market square.

  • By car. Llandovery is on the A40 between Brecon (twenty-two miles) and Carmarthen (twenty-eight), and on the A483 from Builth Wells. Park on Broad Street after six or in the free car park by the castle.
  • By train. The Heart of Wales line stops at Llandovery between Swansea and Shrewsbury, four or five trains a day each way. The station is a four-minute walk; we will meet you with a barrow for bags.
  • By bus. Buses run to Brecon, Carmarthen and Lampeter from the market square, a minute from the door. Not on Sundays, mostly; the folder has the times.

Questions before you book

Is there a minimum stay?

One night on a weekday. If you arrive on a Friday or a Saturday, two nights, because a single Saturday night would leave the Friday or the Sunday empty. The rooms page tells you, for any date, which rooms you can book from it.

What is included in the rate?

The room, breakfast for two cooked to order, VAT, Wi-Fi, the drying room and the bike store. One person in a room pays £15 less. Dogs £10 a night in the Sorting Office.

What time can we arrive?

From four until nine, or later if you ring ahead; Dafydd will wait. Check-out is by half past ten, and bags and bikes can stay until four.

How do we pay?

A card holds the room when we confirm, and you pay when you leave, by card or bank transfer. Nothing is charged at booking.

What if we have to cancel?

Up to seven days before, nothing to pay. Inside seven days we charge the first night only if we cannot re-let the room, which we usually can.

Do you have parking?

On Broad Street, free from six in the evening until eight in the morning, and the free long-stay car park by the castle for the day, two minutes' walk. Bikes go in the locked store.

Pick a night, see which rooms are free.

The rooms page shows every room's rate and whether it is free on the night you choose, with the two-night weekend rule worked out. Then book with the form or ring Ffion on 01550 496 0920; nothing is charged until you leave.
