Bath, dry, brush-out, feet, face and nails
Bath and tidy
The maintenance groom between full grooms, and the whole groom for a smooth or double coat: bath, blast dry, a thorough brush-out or de-shed, feet and face tidied, nails clipped. No clipping of the body.

Half the dogs in the Vale do not need clipping. Labradors, spaniels, collies and retrievers need a bath, a dry and the dead coat out, and that is a bath and tidy.
Two shampoos, a conditioner suited to the coat, then a blast dry that pushes the loose undercoat out before we brush. On a double coat we follow that with a de-shed treatment: a shampoo that loosens the undercoat and twenty minutes with the right rake, which takes out the coat you would otherwise find on the sofa for the next three weeks.
Feet are tidied so they do not slip on the kitchen floor, the face and eyes are cleaned up, the sanitary area trimmed and nails clipped. For a curly coat it is the groom to have at the three-to-four-week mark to keep the coat in condition until the next full groom. We never clip a double coat; it does not grow back properly and the dog is worse off in the heat.

Questions about bath and tidy
Why will you not clip my Golden Retriever?
A double coat insulates against heat as well as cold, and clipping it damages the guard hairs so it grows back patchy and woolly. A de-shed takes out the undercoat that is making the dog hot. If you have been told otherwise, come and see the difference.
