For grown-ups

Adult coaching

Beginners' courses from a standing start, weekly groups by level and one-to-one lessons on clay. Groups from £11 an hour.

The biggest group of adults we coach is people who have never played or who last held a racket at school. The Monday beginners' course starts every six weeks and all you need is a pair of trainers.

Groups are capped at six a court, and a coach feeds balls rather than making you rally before you can. By week four most beginners are keeping it going across the net, and by week six they are on the court for a Sunday social game.

Above that, there are three weekly groups: improvers on Mondays, intermediates on Wednesday mornings and a match-play group on Friday mornings that works on doubles positions and what to do with a second serve. You can move up when the coach thinks you should, not when a term ends.

Rhian and her assistant coach take one-to-one lessons on the clay courts. Most people book a block of four to fix a single shot, then stop. We would rather you left and played than kept paying.

What is included

Questions about adult coaching

I have a bad shoulder. Is that a problem?

Tell the coach first. Most things can be worked around with grip and serve changes. If a doctor or physio has told you to stop, we would follow what they said.

Do I need to be a member for coaching?

No. Visitors pay a little more, and the first beginners' course counts towards your joining fee if you stay.

Come and hit a ball before you pay for anything.

A free guest session on any Sunday morning or Wednesday club night. Borrow a racket from the pavilion, meet whoever is on the next court, and decide over a cup of tea.
