Trellis and screening

Trellis toppers, slatted screens and privacy panels for patios, bin stores and the bit of garden overlooked.

Trellis toppers from £22 a bay, slatted screens from £140 a metre

Most screening jobs start with one window: a new extension next door, a bedroom that looks straight onto your patio. A trellis on top of the fence, or a slatted screen around the seating, fixes it without a two-metre wall.

A trellis topper adds 300 or 450 millimetres to a fence. On a boundary the total stays under two metres, so it needs no planning permission, and a climber grown up it does the rest of the work in two summers. We fit them to our fences and to most others, after checking the posts will take the extra wind.

Slatted screens are horizontal planed boards on 70 millimetre posts, with a 10 or 15 millimetre gap: privacy from a seat but light through. We build them in pressure-treated softwood, which turns silver unless you oil it, or in thermally modified timber for an extra £45 a metre.

Bin stores are made in the yard to fit two or three wheelie bins and the recycling boxes Caerphilly council hands out, with lift-up lids and doors that latch.

  • A check that existing posts will take the load

Questions about trellis and screening

How high can I go on the boundary?

Two metres including the trellis, without planning permission, on a back boundary. Next to a road, one metre.

Will the slats warp?

Planed, kiln-dried boards fixed with two screws at every post stay flat. Rough sawn boards nailed on do not, which is why we do not use them.

Can you fix trellis to my neighbour's fence?

Only with their written agreement. If the fence is theirs, the trellis has to go on posts of your own.
