Gates

Gates that stay level and shut.

Made in the yard to the opening, or made to measure in steel, and hung on a post a size up from the fence. Six types, each with a price that includes hanging it.

How we hang one

The brace runs up from the hinge.

A ledged and braced gate is three horizontal ledges and two diagonal braces. The braces run up from the bottom hinge towards the latch side, so the weight of the gate pushes along them into the hinge post. Get it the wrong way round and the gate drops within a year; we still see it on new gates.

The hanging post is 125 millimetres for a side gate and 150 for a driveway pair, set 750 millimetres into concrete. Steel driveway gates hang on steel posts. Every timber gate gets rehung or adjusted free in its first year if it moves.

  • Made to the opening, not cut down from stock
  • Galvanised T-hinges or adjustable band-and-hook hinges
  • A latch, a bolt and a padlock hasp on every side gate

Questions about gates

Can you match my existing fence?

Usually. We bring a board offcut to the survey and match the board width and colour of the treatment; a stain evens it out after the first summer.

Will a timber gate drop?

Not if the brace runs the right way and the post is big enough. If it does in the first year, we come back and adjust it free.

Do you fit electric gates?

No. We hang the gates and lay a duct for the cables, and an electrician fits and commissions the motors.

Measure the opening, then book the survey.

Lowri measures the opening, checks the posts and the ground, and brings ironmongery samples. Steel gates take about four weeks from the survey; timber gates about two.
