How a job runs

From the string line to the swept patio.

  1. Survey

Lowri walks the line with a wheel and a probe, checks the boundary and the ground, and takes photographs. Free, about forty minutes.

  2. Fixed price

A written price within two working days, with the style, height, posts, gates, removal and start week. It does not change.

  3. Posts in

Day one: the old fence comes out, a string line goes up and the posts go into concrete. Concrete needs a night before rails or panels.

  4. Boards on, cleared away

Rails, boards or panels, gates hung, and every offcut and old board loaded onto the truck. You get photographs of the finished line.

On every job

Four things we do on every boundary.

Measured, not guessed

Lowri walks every boundary with a wheel and a probe before anyone gives you a price. The price you sign is the price you pay.

Neighbours told first

We knock next door before the old fence comes down, and we leave both gardens as tidy as we found them.

Tanalised timber only

Every post, rail and board is pressure-treated to Use Class 4 for ground contact. No dip-treated panels, ever.

On site when we said

A text the evening before and another when the van leaves the yard. If rain stops concrete going in, we ring you first.

Gates

A gate is only as good as its hanging post.

Most gates we are called to are dragging on the path because the post has leaned. Ours hang on a post a size up from the fence, set 750 millimetres deep. Timber side gates are made in the yard to the opening from £385; steel driveway pairs are galvanised, powder-coated and made to measure in Ystrad Mynach from £1,450.

Closeboard, 28 m

Lowri found a storm drain exactly where two of our posts would have gone and moved the bays to miss it. Twenty-eight metres of closeboard, two days, and they swept the patio.

Storm repair

Three panels flat after the January gale. Gareth gave me a day, Thursday, and they were there Thursday. New concrete posts, two of the old panels back in, and photos for the insurer, who paid in the end.

Steel driveway gates

Lovely gates and hung perfectly level. Four stars because the fabricator ran a fortnight late and I had to chase for the new date. Ironside were honest about it once I asked.

Questions people ask

How much does a new fence cost?

Closeboard is £95 a metre at six feet and panel fencing £70, supplied and fitted with posts in concrete. A typical twenty-metre back garden is £1,400 to £1,900 plus £160 if the old fence goes away. The estimator works out your own figure.

Is the survey really free?

Yes. Lowri measures, probes the ground and checks the boundary, and the written price follows within two working days. There is no obligation and no follow-up call unless you ask for one.

How long will it take?

Two fitters put up about twelve metres of closeboard or eighteen of panel fencing a day. Most back gardens are two days, because the concrete needs a night before the rails go on.

Do you tell the neighbours?

We knock before we start, and we need access to their side for an hour or so to fix boards. If the fence is shared, we can split the price between you on two invoices.

What about the old fence?

We take it away for £8 a metre: cut up, loaded and taken to a timber recycler in Rhymney. Concrete posts go to an aggregate yard, not landfill.

Are you insured?

Yes: £5 million public liability, and we call before we dig to check for buried cables and pipes. The numbers are placeholders on this demonstration site.
