Fencing

Agricultural fencing

Stock fencing, post and rail and field gates for smallholdings, paddocks and farms on the valley sides.

A new post and rail fence with stock netting running along a sloping green field edge with hills beyond

Stock netting from £14 a metre, post and rail from £34

Half the fields above Caerphilly are too steep for a tractor-mounted post driver, which is why we still dig and ram a good share of our field posts by hand. It is slower, and it is the only way the line stays straight on a 1-in-4 bank.

Stock fencing is pressure-treated round posts every three metres with a strainer post at each end and every change of direction, strained netting, and one or two lines of barbed wire or a plain top wire as you prefer. On level ground we use a hired post driver and fence 150 metres a day; on banks and rock we dig, and the price on the survey says which.

Post and rail is the paddock fence: three rails at four feet for ponies, four rails at five feet for horses, nailed to round or square posts, with the rails on the field side so a horse leaning on it pushes against the posts, not the nails.

Galvanised field gates are hung on heavy timber posts with a spring-catch latch and a chain. Kissing gates and stiles on public footpaths need the council's say-so first; we know who to ask.

What is included

  • Strainer posts at every end and turn
  • Netting strained, not just pulled tight
  • Rails on the field side of the posts
  • Field gates hung on 200 mm posts
  • Hand-dug where a driver cannot go

What it costs

Stock netting on round posts from £14 a metre on long runs; post and rail from £34 a metre; galvanised field gates from £295 hung. The fence estimator works out a range for your length, height and style; the survey sets the fixed price.

Questions about agricultural

What is the minimum length?

There is not one, but a hundred metres of stock fence costs much less a metre than twenty, because the strainers and the set-up are the same.

Can you fence over rock?

Yes, with a breaker and resin-set posts where we have to. It is priced on the survey once we have probed the line.

Do you do electric fencing?

Offset brackets for an electric wire on a post and rail fence, yes. Energisers and full electric systems, no.

Lowri measures the line, probes the ground and checks the boundary, and the written price follows within two working days. It does not change once you have signed it.
