The team

Fourteen of us, one yard.

Aled runs the workshop and the teams, Kerry surveys every house, four people make the windows and three teams fit them. The window Kerry measures is made across the yard and fitted by people you can name.

The people

Aled Morgan, a broad Welsh man of about fifty-five with short grey hair, in a navy fleece, beside a sample anthracite window in the showroom

Aled Morgan

Owner. The workshop, the fitting teams and the phone

Aled started as a fitter for a double-glazing firm in Newport in 1986, set up Gwent Glazing with two vans and a rented unit in 1994, and moved to the Avondale estate when he started making the windows himself in 2003. He still checks every window off the line before it goes on the van.

Kerry Price, a Welsh woman of about forty with auburn hair, in a green softshell jacket, holding a laser measure and a tablet outside a terraced house

Kerry Price

Surveyor. Every survey, every quote, every order

Kerry trained as a building surveyor, joined Gwent Glazing in 2011 and has done nearly every survey since. She measures every opening herself, checks the lintels and the cills, and is the one who will tell you that the window you want will not pass as a fire escape.

The yard

Who makes it and who fits it.

The workshop

Four people on the saw, the welder, the cleaner and the glazing bench, making about sixty windows a week from the profile to the glass.

Three fitting teams

Three fitters each, led by Rhys, Jason and Tomos, who between them have fitted for us for over fifty years. One team per house, start to finish.

The office

Donna runs the diary, the FENSA registrations and the guarantee certificates, and rings the day before to say which team is coming.

Repairs

Gareth does the repairs van: misted units, locks and hinges, on anyone's windows, usually in one visit.

On the day

One window out, one window in, never open for long.

The team takes out one old frame at a time and has the new one in, packed, fixed and sealed before the next comes out, so the house is never open to the weather for more than an hour per window. Dust sheets go down first; the old frames go on the van for recycling; the plaster is made good before they leave.

Kerry measures every opening with a laser, checks the lintels and the cills, shows you the colours and the glass, and writes a fixed quote at your kitchen table. The quote builder gives you the band before she comes.
