The team

Bethan, Tomos, and sixty-four carers.

All employed, all paid above the Real Living Wage and for their travel time, all trained before their first visit, and none on zero-hours contracts. It is why most of them stay.

Registered manager

Bethan Rees

Manager registration with Social Care Wales: placeholder on this demonstration site. With Cartref since 2013.

Bethan was a district nurse in Abergavenny and the villages for twenty years before she started Cartref in 2013 with four carers and a borrowed car. She still does most first visits herself. Practical, warm, and impossible to fob off; families tend to say she is the one who finally listened.

  • Reviews every three months
  • Working with district nurses and GPs
  • Complaints, which she wants to hear

Senior carer and dementia lead

Tomos Bevan

Social Care Wales registration: placeholder on this demonstration site. With Cartref since 2016.

Tomos started as a carer at twenty-four after looking after his grandfather, who had dementia, and has been with Cartref ever since. He trains every new carer, leads on dementia care and still does a round of visits each week so that he never forgets what the job is. First language Welsh.

The carers

How we recruit, train and keep them.

Every carer has an enhanced DBS check and two references before they start, then a week of training and at least three shadow shifts with an experienced carer before they visit anyone alone. Training covers moving and handling, medicines, infection control, dementia, safeguarding and first aid, and is refreshed every year. Every carer is registered with Social Care Wales, as the law in Wales requires.

We pay above the Real Living Wage, pay travel time and mileage between visits, give guaranteed hours, and do not use zero-hours contracts. Rotas are planned so that each carer sees the same people. Eleven carers speak Welsh.

Registration numbers for the agency and the carers on this demonstration site are placeholders. A live agency is inspected by Care Inspectorate Wales, and its latest report would be linked here.

Talk to Bethan or Tomos about care.

Ring, send the enquiry form or drop into Frogmore Street. We will talk through what is needed, explain the costs and the council's part honestly, and arrange a free first visit at home, usually within a week.
