A carer who lives in, so staying at home is possible

Live-in care

A carer who lives in the home for one or two weeks at a time, taking turns with a second carer, for people who need someone there day and night but want to stay in their own house rather than move to a care home.

Live-in care is often the alternative to a care home that families do not know exists. It costs about the same as a good care home place in Monmouthshire, and the person stays at home with their own things, their garden and their cat.

Two live-in carers share the role, usually changing over every one or two weeks, so there is always someone who knows the person well. The carer helps with everything from personal care to cooking, cleaning, laundry, medicines and company, and takes a two-hour break each day, which we cover with a visiting carer if the person cannot be left. They sleep at night; if the person needs help most nights, we add a night carer or talk about whether waking nights are needed.

The carer needs their own bedroom and access to a bathroom and the internet. We visit first to assess the house and the person's needs, then match carers carefully: live-in care only works if the two people get on. Many of our live-in clients have dementia, and live-in care can mean they stay at home far longer than anyone expected.

Questions about live-in care

Is live-in care cheaper than a care home?

For one person it is usually similar; for a couple it is often much cheaper than two care home places. The cost estimator shows visits and nights; live-in is priced by the week.

What if the person needs help in the night?

An occasional call is part of live-in care. If it is most nights, the carer will be exhausted, and we will add a night carer or talk about waking nights.

Talk to Bethan or Tomos about care.

Ring, send the enquiry form or drop into Frogmore Street. We will talk through what is needed, explain the costs and the council's part honestly, and arrange a free first visit at home, usually within a week.
