Dismantling

A forty-foot leylandii between our house and next door's conservatory, taken down in pieces on ropes in a morning. Nothing touched either building, the chip went in the truck and the lawn was raked. The estimator had said £450 to £850 and the quote was £640. That is what we paid.

Crown reduction

Our beech is in the conservation area and I had no idea. Ffion checked, did the six-week notice, and reduced it by two metres to the standard with photographs before and after. It looks like a tree, not a hat stand. The planner rang to say it was the tidiest notice he had seen.

Hedges

Sixty metres of laurel that had got away from me after my husband died. Two of them, a day, sheets everywhere, the lane swept, and a card through the door with the date for next spring. Three hundred and forty pounds and I could have cried.

Stump grinding

Three stumps ground out the same morning the ash came down, scanned for the water pipe first, which they found twenty centimetres from the biggest one. Turf went back over by teatime. Bottom of the band because we booked it with the felling, as the website said.

Storm line

Ash across the drive at eleven at night in the February storm. Owen rang back inside ten minutes, said £260 and was there by half past twelve with Ffion; drive clear by two. Four stars only because the daylight crew came the day after they said, which they rang to explain and knocked £50 off for. Honest firm.

Surveys

We send every client with a big oak near the house to Wye Valley for the lender's report. Two pages, plain English, the species, the distance and the soil, back within the week. The lenders accept them without a murmur, which is all a solicitor wants.

About the four stars

The daylight crew came a day late after the February storm. We now book the return before we leave.

Gareth\'s ash was cleared off the drive at two in the morning and we said the chipper crew would be back the next day; forty other people had trees down that night and they came the day after. He was right to mark us down for it, and the fix is simple: the storm climber now books the daylight return in the diary from the roadside before driving off, and if the diary cannot take it we say so there and then, not the next morning. The £50 off was the least of it.

A large ash tree fallen across a narrow country lane after a storm at dusk, two tree surgeons in hi-vis orange cutting it up beside a green pickup with an amber beacon
