A price band before you ring.
A fixed quote after we look.

Tree surgeons from a yard on Dixton Road: felling and dismantling, crown reductions to the British Standard, hedges, stumps, a storm line answered by one of us at any hour, and the TPO paperwork done for you. Pick the job below and the estimator gives you the band we actually charge.

How much, roughly?

The job, the size and the access. The estimate page gives you a band, a lead time and what is included, before you ring anyone.

A price band before you ringThe estimator on this website turns the job, the size of the tree and the access into a price band from the rates we actually charge. The quote after a site visit is a fixed figure, and it is the figure on the invoice.
Qualified climbers, £5 million coverEvery climber holds the NPTC chainsaw and aerial rescue tickets, two of us are Lantra-trained in tree inspection, and the public liability certificate for £5 million goes out with every quote. We have never had to use it.
We check the TPO before we quoteA third of the trees in Monmouth, Ross and Chepstow sit in a conservation area or under a Tree Preservation Order. We check every quote against the council map, free, and fill in the application for £90 if one is needed.

Services

Six things we do, each with a price.

All six

01

Tree felling and dismantling

A dead ash by the road, a leylandii that has swallowed the garden, a beech that is too close to the house: felled in one where there is room and dismantled in sections on ropes where there is not, the chip taken away and the logs stacked or taken. Priced by the size of the tree and the access, with a band on the estimator before you ring.

A small tree under 6 metres £220 to £380, a medium tree £450 to £850, a large tree dismantled in sections £900 to £1,800, including VAT and taking the arisings away.

02

Crown reduction and pruning

A tree that is too big for its garden, shading the kitchen or leaning on the phone line does not need to come down; it needs a reduction done to the British Standard, cut back to growth points so it stays the shape it was and does not throw up a thicket of regrowth. Crown lifting, thinning, deadwooding and formative pruning of young trees too.

A small tree £180 to £300, a medium tree £350 to £620, a large tree £650 to £1,200, including VAT and the chip taken away.

03

Hedge cutting and reduction

Laurel, leylandii, beech, yew, hawthorn and the mixed field hedges round the village gardens: trimmed once or twice a year, or taken down hard from four metres to two so it can be kept from the ground again. Sheets down, clippings chipped, the lane swept, and a date in the diary for next year if you want one.

A hedge under 10 metres and under 2 metres high £120 to £180; 10 to 30 metres or up to 3 metres £190 to £360; longer or taller, with the long-reach kit or a platform, £380 to £700, including VAT and the clippings taken away.

04

Stump grinding

The stump left by a felled tree, ground out to 30 centimetres below the lawn so you can turf, plant or lay a patio over it. A narrow grinder that fits through a 75-centimetre gate, the grindings raked back into the hole or taken away, and the underground services checked with a cable detector before the wheel goes in.

A stump under 30 centimetres across £90 to £130, 30 to 60 centimetres £140 to £220, over 60 centimetres £230 to £380, including VAT.

05

Emergency storm work

A tree across the drive, a limb on the roof, a leaning ash over the lane after a night of wind: one of us answers the storm line at any hour, tells you the price before we leave, and is with you within ninety minutes across the valley. We make it safe, clear what has to be cleared and come back in daylight for the rest if that is cheaper for you.

The first hour, two of us with the saws and the truck, £180 between 8am and 8pm Monday to Saturday, £260 at night, on Sundays and on bank holidays; then £95 an hour.

06

Tree surveys and planning

A written report on the tree you are worried about, a BS 5837 survey for a planning application or an extension, a mortgage lender's letter about the oak near the house, and the Tree Preservation Order and conservation area paperwork done for you. Two of us are Lantra-qualified inspectors; the report says what the tree is, what condition it is in, and what, if anything, needs doing.

One tree, a visual inspection and a written report, £150.

The estimator

Twelve bands, the ones we quote from, on a page you can read before you ring.

Four jobs, three sizes, two kinds of access. A medium tree felled with the truck on the drive is £450 to £850; the same tree carried through the house is a fifth more; a hedge under ten metres is £120 to £180; a small stump is £90. The band is honest because the final figure depends on what is under the tree, which is what the free visit is for. The quote after it is fixed, in writing, and it is the figure on the invoice.

  • Every band includes VAT and taking the arisings away
  • A lead time with each job, from a week for stumps to three for big trees

How we work

Four things that are true of every job.

We turn up on the day we said

Jobs are booked for a day, not a week. The crew leaves the yard at 7:30 and the first job starts by 8:30; if the weather stops a climb we ring you the night before, not from the gate. Storm work is the exception and takes priority, and we say so when we book you.

A fixed quote, not a day rate that drifts

The estimator gives a band; the site visit gives a figure in writing. It covers the climb, the chip, the clearing up and the cup of tea. The only things that change it are things we could not see from the ground, and we tell you before we cut, not after.

Insured, ticketed, inspected

£5 million public liability and employer's liability on every job, NPTC tickets for every saw in every hand, kit inspected every six months by an independent LOLER inspector, and a written aerial rescue plan on the dashboard of every truck.

We say no to the wrong cut

A tree topped flat grows back weaker and uglier within three years. If what you ask for will harm the tree or breach a TPO, we tell you, we offer the reduction that will work, and if you still want the other thing we will not be the ones to do it.

  • 12postcode areas, from Ross to Chepstow

24 hours

A tree down right now: £260 for the first hour, two of us, within ninety minutes.

Night rate until 8am: the day rate of £180 runs 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and the night rate of £260 covers nights, Sundays and bank holidays, then £95 an hour. The storm line is the yard mobile diverted to whichever of us is on call, and the person who answers has been up a tree. We make it safe first, clear what has to be cleared, and come back in daylight with the chipper for the rest if that is cheaper for you.

  • The price said on the phone before we leave the yard
  • Roads, roofs and cars first; a dated report for your insurer
  • A tree on a power line: ring 105 first, then us

TPOs and conservation areas

A third of the trees round here are protected. We check before we quote, and we do the form.

Monmouth, Chepstow, Usk, Ross and Tintern all have conservation areas over their older streets, and both councils keep Tree Preservation Orders on the big specimens. Cutting a protected tree without consent is a £20,000 fine per tree. Every quote is checked against the council map at no charge; if an application or a six-week notice is needed, Ffion fills it in and submits it for £90 and we book the job round the decision date.

Where we work

Ross to Chepstow, Usk to Coleford, with no travel charge. Twelve postcodes, and a checker.

The five core postcode areas round Monmouth carry no travel charge at all; seven outer areas, from Abergavenny to the Forest towns, add £40 once per job. Type your postcode and the areas page says which, from the list we actually use.

Dismantling

A forty-foot leylandii between our house and next door's conservatory, taken down in pieces on ropes in a morning. Nothing touched either building, the chip went in the truck and the lawn was raked. The estimator had said £450 to £850 and the quote was £640. That is what we paid.

Crown reduction

Our beech is in the conservation area and I had no idea. Ffion checked, did the six-week notice, and reduced it by two metres to the standard with photographs before and after. It looks like a tree, not a hat stand. The planner rang to say it was the tidiest notice he had seen.

RhodriTintern
Hedges

Sixty metres of laurel that had got away from me after my husband died. Two of them, a day, sheets everywhere, the lane swept, and a card through the door with the date for next spring. Three hundred and forty pounds and I could have cried.

Questions people ask before they ring

What does tree work cost?

By the size of the tree and the access: a small tree felled £220 to £380, a medium tree £450 to £850, a large tree dismantled in sections £900 to £1,800; reductions a little less; hedges from £120; stumps from £90. The estimator turns your job into a band in ten seconds, and the quote after a site visit is the fixed figure on the invoice. Everything includes VAT and taking the arisings away.

Do you need to see the tree before quoting?

Yes, every time, because the price depends on what is under the tree and how far the chipper can get to it. The visit is free, takes twenty minutes, and the quote arrives in writing within two working days. The estimator is for knowing roughly before you ring.

Will I need permission from the council?

Only if the tree is under a Tree Preservation Order or in a conservation area, which covers roughly a third of the trees in Monmouth, Ross, Chepstow, Usk and Tintern. We check the council map for every quote, free, and fill in the application for £90 if one is needed. Dead and dangerous trees are exempt on five days' notice.

Are you insured and qualified?

£5 million public liability and employer's liability on every job with the certificate on the quote; NPTC chainsaw, climbing and aerial rescue tickets for everyone who holds a saw; two Lantra-qualified inspectors; kit LOLER-inspected every six months. We are happy to show the certificates at the visit.

What happens to the wood?

Whatever you want. Logs cut to stove length and stacked for you at no charge, or taken back to the yard where they season for the log bags; the chip left on your borders or taken away. We never leave a pile for you to deal with.

Do you work in the rain?

Yes, in rain; not in high wind, because a climber in a moving crown is in danger and so is the groundsman. If the forecast stops a climb we ring the night before and give you the next dry day. Hedges and stumps carry on in most weather.

A band from the estimator. A fixed quote after we have looked.

The estimator turns the job, the size of the tree and the access into a price band before you ring. The quote form takes two minutes; Owen or Ffion replies within two working days with a visit that week, and the quote after it is the figure on the invoice. A tree down right now: the storm line, any hour.
