The team

Dai and Bethan, and a torch.

A carpenter who has spent nearly twenty years in other people's roofs, and a technologist who draws what actually gets built.

Two builders guiding a steel beam into an opened loft

The team

Dai Rees, a weathered man in a brown work shirt, standing in a half-built loft with rafters behind him

Dai Rees

Founder and head carpenter

Dai served his time as a roofing carpenter in Merthyr and started doing lofts in 2008, when the builders who employed him kept getting them wrong. He has spent nearly twenty years in other people's roof spaces and he can tell a good deal from the smell of a loft and the sag of a purlin.

He does most of the first surveys himself, and he will happily climb into yours on a Saturday morning with a torch.

Bethan Mills, a woman in a blue top holding a white helmet, in a boarded loft under new rafters

Bethan Mills

Design and building regulations

Bethan trained as an architectural technologist and spent seven years at a Cardiff practice before she got tired of drawing things that builders would change on site. She now draws the things they actually build, works with our structural engineer, and deals with building control and the party wall notices.

She will sit at your kitchen table and draw three stair positions by hand. She is also the one who says no, kindly, and writes down why.

  • 2.25 mridge to joist is about where most lofts start to work
  • 1.9 mminimum middle headroom on a loft staircase
  • 5–10weeks on site, by the type of loft
  • 0days without a roof over your head: we keep it weathered

Go up with a tape. Then ask us up.

Measure joist to ridge and try the checker. Then book a free survey: Dai or Bethan will tell you what is possible, what it costs, and whether you should leave it alone.
