Taproom

Checked the board on my phone on the train, saw the smoked porter was on, walked up Mill Street and it was on. That is the whole trick and nobody else does it. Pews for benches, the tanks behind the glass, a pint under a fiver.

Tours

The brewer who made the beer did the tour and told us about the batch she poured away. Malt in your hand, a taste out of the tank, then a flight with her at the table. £25 and you leave with a can. Best Saturday afternoon in the Valleys.

Thirty of us upstairs, our own bar, the pie van below, and the room cost £150 that came off the beer anyway. They did not try to sell us a package; they said what the room was and let us get on with it.

Six rounds, £2 a head that all goes to the food bank, a mixed box for the winners, and a quizmaster who reads the Rhondda Leader round in the voice. Full by seven; be warned.

The pale is my best-selling keg line and the van is on time every Thursday. Four stars because the seasonal list comes out Monday and the good ones are gone by Tuesday lunchtime; they need to brew more of the hazy. Told them; they laughed and agreed.

A mixed twelve chosen by them from one line on the form ("nothing too strong, one dark") and a note on the box saying why each one. Same price as the bar, collected on a Wednesday on the way to the market. The Christmas box is the family present now.

About the four stars

Mark is right that the hazy sells out by Tuesday lunchtime. From November we brew it every fortnight.

The seasonal list goes out on Monday morning and the IPA has gone by Tuesday lunch three months running, which is a nice problem and still a problem. From November Cwm Haze moves from a seasonal to a fortnightly brew, which means a fifth fermenter, which means the brewhouse tour gets a minute longer. Trade customers on the Monday email get first call for forty-eight hours before it goes on the website board.
