Eight taps in a chapel, and the board is the board.

A ten-barrel brewery and taproom in the Old Chapel on Mill Street, since 2017: everything on the bar brewed thirty metres from the glass, the board published on this website so you know before the walk up the hill, a food van every Friday, tours on Saturdays with whoever brewed that week, a quiz on Tuesdays for the food bank, and the trade price list in the open.

The board is the boardEight taps, and what is on them is on this website, with style, strength, price and whether it is in cans too. When a keg blows the board changes within the hour; we would rather you knew before the walk up Mill Street.
Brewed thirty metres from the glassEverything on the bar was brewed in the tanks behind the glass wall, on a ten-barrel kit, from Welsh malt where we can get it and water from the hill. Nothing is contract-brewed and nothing is on the bar we did not make.
Food most nights, dogs every nightA different food van every Friday and a pizza oven in the yard on Saturdays; bring your own food any other day. Dogs welcome everywhere except the brewhouse, children until 8pm, and the quiz on Tuesdays is £2 a head to the food bank.
Trade, delivered on ThursdaysKegs, casks and cans to pubs, bars, shops and events across RCT, Merthyr, Caerphilly and Cardiff, ordered by Wednesday noon and delivered Thursday or Friday on our own van. Two kegs and the delivery is free.

The brewery

Six things we do, each with its own page.

All six

01

The taproom

The chapel floor with long tables made from the pews, the bar of reclaimed timber with eight numbered taps, a gallery upstairs you can book, a yard with picnic benches and the pizza oven, and the brewhouse behind a glass wall. Open Thursday to Sunday; a different food van every Friday; children until 8pm; dogs always.

A pint from £4.

02

The beers

Four beers all year (Twyn Pale, Graig Lager, Berw Stout and Pwll Bitter), a seasonal most fortnights from a hazy IPA to a sour with Rhondda rhubarb, a 7.8% imperial stout at Christmas, and a 2.8% table beer for the people driving. Brewed on a ten-barrel kit behind the glass wall, from Welsh malt where we can get it and water from the hill. The board page says what is on today.

Pints from £4.

03

Tours and tastings

The Saturday tour at two: ninety minutes around the brewhouse with whoever brewed that week, malt in your hand, a hop to crush, a taste from a tank, then a flight of four on the chapel floor and a can to take home. £25, twelve people at most, booked on the booking page. Private tours for up to ten on any day, £180, with a tasting that matches your taste.

The Saturday tour £25 a head, including a flight of four thirds and a can.

04

Events and hire

The Tuesday quiz (£2 a head to the Pontypridd food bank, teams of six), a different food van every Friday, pizza on Saturdays, a band about once a month, a running club from the yard on Wednesdays, and a Christmas party with the pulpit as a DJ booth. The gallery seats thirty for £150 against the bar; the whole chapel takes a hundred and twenty for weddings and parties on a Monday to Wednesday.

Quiz £2 a head to the food bank.

05

Shop and cans

The shop by the door sells every beer we have in cans at the taproom price: £3.80 a can, a mixed twelve for £36, twenty-four for £66, and a gift pack of four cans and a branded glass for £22. Order on the booking page for collection on Wednesday or any taproom day, or delivery on our van in CF37 and CF38 on Thursdays for £3, free over £40.

A can £3.

06

Tours

Saturday at two, with whoever brewed that week.

Ninety minutes round the tanks: the kit, the malt in your hand, a hop to crush, a taste from a fermenter that is not finished yet, and the story of the batch that went down the drain in 2019. Then a flight of four on the chapel floor with the brewer at the table, and a can to take home. £25, twelve people at most. Private tours any day for up to ten.

  • Next tour: Saturday, 24 October, 2pm

How we work

Four things that are true of the chapel.

Strength and style on every pump clip

ABV to a decimal, the style in plain words, and the honest note (bitter, hazy, sour, strong) on the clip, the board and the website, so nobody orders a 7.8% by accident. Halves and thirds of everything.

Taproom prices, and the same in the shop

A pint from £4.60, a flight of four thirds £9, a can £3.80 and twelve for £36. The shop sells at the taproom price, not a gift-shop one, and the trade price list is public on the trade page.

A chapel, kept

The Old Chapel was built in 1868 and closed in 2009. We kept the gallery, the pews became the benches, the pulpit is the DJ booth at the Christmas party, and the roof was fixed before a single tank came in.

Open four days, so we can brew the other three

Thursday to Sunday for the taproom, Monday to Wednesday for brewing, canning and deliveries. It is why the beer is fresh and the staff are not exhausted. Wednesday the shop is open for collections.

Taproom

Checked the board on my phone on the train, saw the smoked porter was on, walked up Mill Street and it was on. That is the whole trick and nobody else does it. Pews for benches, the tanks behind the glass, a pint under a fiver.

Tours

The brewer who made the beer did the tour and told us about the batch she poured away. Malt in your hand, a taste out of the tank, then a flight with her at the table. £25 and you leave with a can. Best Saturday afternoon in the Valleys.

Events

Thirty of us upstairs, our own bar, the pie van below, and the room cost £150 that came off the beer anyway. They did not try to sell us a package; they said what the room was and let us get on with it.

Questions people ask at the bar

What is on today?

The board page lists every tap with the style, the strength, the price and whether it is in cans, updated when a keg changes. You can filter it by style and by strength, which exists because somebody asked for the darkest thing under five per cent.

When are you open?

Thursday from four, Friday from four, Saturday from noon, Sunday from noon until eight. Monday to Wednesday we brew, can and deliver, and the shop opens on Wednesday for collections. The hero line on the home page says whether we are open right now.

Can I book the tour?

Yes, on the booking page: Saturday at two, £25 with a flight and a can, twelve at most. Private tours for up to ten run any day for £180.

Do you do food?

A different van every Friday from five and the pizza oven every Saturday from one; the rota is on the taproom page. Any other night bring your own; plates are behind the bar.

Can I buy beer to take home?

The shop by the door sells every can at the taproom price: £3.80, twelve for £36, twenty-four for £66. Order on the booking page for collection on Wednesday or any taproom day, or delivery in CF37 and CF38 on Thursdays.

I run a pub. How do I stock you?

The trade page has the price list in the open: kegs £98, casks £72, cases £42 plus VAT, ordered by Wednesday noon and delivered Thursday or Friday, free from two kegs. Ring Dafydd or use the form; a brewer comes to check the cellar in the first month.

Saturday at two: the tour, a flight, and a can to take home.

Ninety minutes round the tanks with whoever brewed that week, malt and hops in your hands, a taste from a fermenter, then four thirds on the chapel floor. £25, twelve at most. The same form takes a mixed box, the gallery, or a trade order.
