The low shelf, on purpose

Children's toys

Wooden toys, knitted dragons and pocket-money things on a shelf at the right height for choosing them.

Wooden animals, a knitted red dragon, a stacking toy and a small wooden train on a low shelf

The toy shelf is low on purpose. It is meant to be touched, and small people are welcome to take their time over how to spend a pound coin.

Most of it is wooden or knitted, from small British and European makers, and everything carries its safety mark and an age label. The knitted dragons are made by a group of women in Pontardawe and each comes with a name on a tag, which can be changed. Pocket-money things start at £3 and do not require batteries.

If you are buying for a child you do not know very well, tell us how old they are and we will find something suitable. We can also tell you what to avoid, for under-threes particularly.

How it works here

  • Every toy safety marked and age labelled
  • Clear guidance on what suits under-threes
  • A pocket-money shelf from £3
  • No batteries in most of it
  • Gift wrap for £3 with a label a child can open

What it costs

Pocket-money toys from £3, wooden animals from £12, knitted dragons at £28, wooden trains from £34. More prices are on the shop page, and the gift finder picks six by budget.

Questions about children's toys

Are they all suitable for under-threes?

No. Small parts are labelled, and the safe ones have their own section at the end of the shelf. Ask us if you are not sure.

Can you personalise a dragon?

The name on the tag, yes, for free. The Pontardawe knitters will also make one in other colours with about a month of notice.

Number 8, about halfway along the arcade.

Open every day but Sunday morning. Tell us the person and the budget and we will have you out in five minutes, wrapped.
